Golden Globes 2018

Also pretty embarrassing to have James Franco win best actor while wearing a Time’s Up pin, then have him instantly called out on twitter for his own sordid history of sexual harassment.

It’s good he was called out immediately. He probably sees himself differently. Just as other accused have.

If we are waiting for the perfect people to make changes, then no changes will ever happen.

How do people know that Kendall Jenner got an invitation rather than being someone else’s +1? Just curious because I didn’t see it anywhere.

Mercury news stated she got an invite from Vogue magazine.

Ok. (Assuming it’s true) So she is a model and a company that works with models invited one of the more current, talked about models using a spot I am guessing they paid for. A model that they likely wish to work with on upcoming projects. And who had worked with them in the last year. I don’t see anything surprising or underhanded about that.
That is a completely separate issue from whether or not the others should have been included by someone as well.

@Dad2020

In case you aren’t aware, the Golden Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. It seems that if K. Jenner was invited by Vogue magazine, she was there as their guest and was not included as part of the awards ceremony. it’s true that Mira Sorvino won a GG and an Oscar but that was in 1995; she hasn’t done anything I’ve heard of in about 20 years. If someone else had invited her and if she had wanted to come, I’m sure she could have.
Again, they can’t invite everyone who’s ever won an award.

“It’s a busy month:

1/11/2018 - Critics’ Choice Awards
1/21/2018 - Screen Actors Guild Awards
1/28/2018 - Grammys”

You forgot The Fake News Awards Show. It was supposed to be yesterday but got postponed until the 17th.

“Oprah speech now is going to be followed up by showing her kissing HW. His sexual harassments goes back many many years. It going to be hard for many to believe that either Oprah or Meryl had no knowledge of it.”

You know who else there are pictures of with Harvey Weinstein - who, at one time, was in the entertainment business? I’ll give you a hint - he was a Reality TV star with his own show.

It just seems to be something that could of been better coordinated with all parties associated with the Golden Globes… I’m not picking on Vogue, but using them as an example, would they have gotten better publicity inviting a Mira Sorvino or a Kendall Jenner?

So, should they have orchestrated it better for publicity or not addressed it at all? You keep sending mixed messages here. I get it. You want to dump on anything “Hollywood”.

Does anyone know what the criteria is for getting an invitation to the Golden Globes? Were all those women invited in previous years? I don’t know the answers but it might be relevant as to why invitations were not extended this year. Not sure McGowan would have accepted in any event given some of the backlash she has experienced.

Also wondering what difference it really makes if any of the women standing together at the Golden Globes did know or suspect the harassment. Are we looking for women to share the blame? If so there have been numerous actresses who have expressed regret that they didn’t do more or believe more of the women and men who did come forward years ago. But if these women had attempted to shine a light on the issue I suspect the same people criticizing them now would have been equally as critical years ago. I honestly think there is just some segment of the population that really does not want to hear about these sorts of issues – then or now. And that’s fair enough as it’s pretty unpleasant stuff. But there is likely change on the horizon precisely because there were enough people who recognized the issue was real and perceived the current environment might support change.

The Golden Globes took the opportunity to keep the momentum going and i think we will see other industries do likewise in their own way.

Who are they more likely to have modeling in the pages of their magazine for the advertisers who pay their bills? Ms. Jenner or the 50 year old Ms Sorvino?

Joblue.- So if I understand you correctly. I get that she hasn’t done anything in a while. But what I don’t get is you seem to think that is was okay not to invite her even though theme of the evening was sexual harassment and she is one of the victims. I get that they can’t invite everyone but I find it hard to believe there wasn’t a way to squeeze in a few more victims into the room, including Mira Sorvino.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: This is not a debate site. You can state your position once, but reiterating it over and over again is not allowed. I am closing the thread temporarily. When I reopen it, people continuing to debate will be given warnings.

OK, we’ll try one more time…

I’m confused that Dad2020 says “the theme of the evening was sexual harassment” as if it were the theme announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press, and therefore the Hollywood Foreign Press ought to have issued invitations consistent with that theme.

I thought that Times Up decided to make their point at the Golden Globes. But the Times Up women were the invitees, not the hosts, of this event. Various women invitees decided to bring activist guests, but Times Up was not in a position to issue a slew of invitations.

I’m not sure if the Times up women or other various women invitees or whoever dropped the ball in my opinion but victims should of been invited and acknowledged instead of activist guests.

As I understand it, the actors, directors and other luminaries are invited, and each one is entitled to bring a guest. Often they bring spouses or partners. Are you suggesting that the Hollywood Foreign Press should police the guests invited by the invitees?

The Hollywood Foreign Press, which was hosting the event, didn’t invite activists, nor did they invite anyone because she was a victim. Some individual invitees chose to bring activists. One could say that they should have brought victims instead, but why? The whole point of Times Up is solidarity among women in different situations, solidarity between these famous women and women who are in lower status jobs. They wanted to bring in activists who were not in entertainment.

It sounds like you would have brought someone different. But I see no problem with the guests they did bring. Nor do I see how it detracted from their message in any way. So this argument is confusing me.

It was the first time so many activists appeared as guests. Eight total, from what I read. So, it appears that it was an organized move by the celebrities (and publicists?), and they purposely avoided inviting the activists who can be credited with blowing the whistle on sexual harassment in Hollywood. It’s like they wanted to highlight activism, just not the activism everyone was wearing a pin for. Perhaps they didn’t want the women who had their careers derailed there to steal some of the spotlight. Who knows? Anyway, it was poorly thought out.

The activists? The people who blew the whistle on harassment in Hollywood were women who were harassed, and journalists Ronan Farrow, Jodi Kantor and Rachel Abrams. Not activists.

Rose McGowan is an activist and the first woman who spoke out about it.
