Can I just say that Viola Davis always NAILS the awards shows? Elegant, appropriate and gorgeous. She just oozes class.
@TatinG, Meryl Streep was addressing the peers who honored her. This was a message to the entertainment industry and journalists behind this award, so I don’t understand your comment about Meryl Streep “lecturing” those in ravaged communities with darkened factories. I think you missed the point, on purpose, in your post.
I love Meryl Streep and love her work and thought her speech last night was almost perfect. She could have done without the dig on football and MMA though. She articulated so brilliantly why we shouldn’t put others down, but then resorted to her own put down. And with the NFL being made up of predominantly of minority players, it made the insult even more insensitive.
But the biggest faux pas to me was that Justin Timberlake/Jimmy Fallon La La Land skit. They were playing a gay couple for laughs. That to me was tone deaf.
Very well said. Glad to know not all sanity is lost on this forum. ![]()
52 - I thought the speech was for the wider viewership. And while I agree that PE should not be insulting or engaging in tweeting wars, Hollywood is sometimes tone deaf to those outside its elite circle. Streep's speech showed that. To take the higher ground means avoiding insults all around.
It’s not like Meryl is spending her time making Hangover movies. Many of the topics covered in these award winning movies DO have a political/human statement and element – it’s their job to educate themselves for that role – FOR those people and causes they are representing in the film or television show.
The leader of the free world has the power to influence greatly the behavior of others, far more than the perpetrators of that offense. THAT’s why she mentioned him. If you’re not giving him a pass, you should have no problem with others who aren’t either.
Just because people disagree with you does not make their POV insane.
Again, sorry but how is saying that if all people from foreign lands are not welcome in Hollywood, there will be nothing to watch but martial arts and football, insulting to people who like football. I like college football and I’m not insulted. I would however be unhappy if there were no other options besides football which was, I believe, the point of the statement. IMO, it is a HUGE reach to say that she was insulting to football and MMA. No “digs” that I can see.
It’s almost as if people are looking very hard to find some way to be insulted.
edit: @fractalmstr please point out the posts displaying a lack of sanity. I missed them.
Yep. It’s deflection.
Again - I loved what she said - (except for the football.MMA thing), but she did specifically say that MMA ‘is not art by the way’
The MMA responded
“Meryl, I’m a lifelong fan of your work but also a lifelong martial artist who happens to promote mixed martial arts around the world. The global sport of mixed martial arts celebrates male and female athletes from all around the world who work years tirelessly honing their craft and — yes — art,” Coker wrote, explaining to Streep that his industry is surprisingly similar to hers. “They come from every country and every walk of life.”
It’s really hard to argue with what she said: diversity makes our country better, it’s wrong to mock the disabled, empathy is good for everyone.
This will be my last point. It seems that folks are trying to be offended. Ms Streep didnt lecture residents of ravaged communities, nor she castigate anyone for political beliefs. She talked about bullying, and the need for the press to hold folks accountable.
Now on to a fashion note, I LOVED Janelle Monae’s outfit!
I didn’t watch GG last night because I was too caught up with a mini series. I just watched Meryl’s speech and it brought me close to tears. I am glad she is using her fame to talk about what she believes in. It is nice to be at her level of success that she doesn’t need to care about her ratings.
Since I don’t want this thread closed, I’m going to ignore the political posts - many of which are purposefully disingenuous or provocative - and ask:
Who looked best? Favorite looks (Besides the already-mentioned Viola Davis, who just rocked)?
@katliamom loved Janelle Monae, and Evan Rachel Wood
@katliamom
I like your post!
My favorite looks were, Ruth Negga, Lily Collins, Natalie Portman and Zoe Saldana. Runner ups Mandy Moore and Emma Stone.
And for the men, Ryan Gosling.
Sorry @partyof5 But Janelle Monae makes my worst dressed list.
@wisteria100 lol I guess different strokes for different folks. I agree with you about Ryan Gosling!
I think it’s sad that women often feel they have to don outrageous fashions for these events. There is always such scrutiny about their looks and their fashion choices, no matter how young or old they are. I was saddened to see so much bosom on display and felt it was distracting and inappropriate and unclassy.
The men all looked ho-hum similar.
@partyof5 . Exactly- different strokes for different folks. I saw that Nicole Kidman was on some best lists, but then she turned up on some worst as well!
As for Meryl, she has said she doesn’t buy in to the whole fashion thing. Seems like she’s uncomfortable with it. But fashion is art too. Nonetheless she is a real beauty
@partyof5
One more thing. I would have liked Janelle’s dress better if it was the same length all around. Didn’t care for the high/low thing. But she certainly is a pretty woman and had a great yr in movies.
