Art can be political, but it’s not required to be political. Sometimes fluff is just fluff, and should be appreciated on those merits.

Kerry Washington’s dress was great right up until the awkward hem-the length was awkward and the way it belled out a little bit, but not enough, didn’t work very well. Either make it a long, tight midi, or an exaggerated trumpet, but that hem didn’t commit to either line.

Art IS political. Always has been. We denigrate the importance of art in society when we relegate it to merely “entertainment.” I think the GG’s tends to recognize that more, maybe because of its cosmopolitan foundations.

And perhaps because of the alcohol as well.

Lest we forget, political statements at awards ceremonies are nothing new:

In 1973, Native American actress and activist Sacheen Littlefeather refused Marlon Brando’s Oscar in front of millions of viewers. On Brando’s behalf, she used the opportunity to make a political statement decrying the stereotyping of Native Americans in movies and TV, and to support American Indian Movement activists at Wounded Knee, S.D. Some in the audience booed, but others found it inspiring even years after the event.

Weighing in on the dresses…my favorites are Emma Stone, Lily Collins, and Rachel Bloom’s. Rachel is my D’s friend. Hated many of the dresses. The very extreme versions of low cut just were not attractive either. Not familiar with many of the actresses and just commenting on the dresses.

Loved Meryl’s speech.

Too many low-cut dresses, dresses that exposed too much, that were unflattering, and just plain overdone. It’s one of the most consistent criticisms of the dresses that I’ve read.

I was discussing the GG’s and fashion in general with some of my GF’s last night in a group chat. One of them posted this which I thought was pretty funny:

When I try a dress on and it doesn’t make me look good, I just throw it on the floor. Like, no, you don’t deserve to be hung up. Lie there and think about what you’ve done.

One article I read said the necklines gave a whole new meaning to the term “golden globes”. I just kept thinking that someone left off part of the dress, like the fichus that the heroines in my romance novels keep taking off after they leave the house (so their father/husband won’t see how low cut the dress is).

I’ve never liked the style of low cut dresses the way most are designed. They are not attractive on any size boobs. They make the big boobs like weird and small boobs look non existent. I like low cuts if they are camouflaged to some degree with interesting detail.
