I learned a lot about the holiday and its place in Chinese American culture via my daughter, adopted during the two-week celebration in 1998. I know we have CCers with ties via their families and via adoption.
My big celebration will be on 2/28 when I am hosting a Lunar New Year party for my grupo inglés-español (English-Spanish group) which includes several people born in China. I will buy congee (rice broth) and decorate with tangerines w/stems on and gladioli. You and yours?
We do red envelopes (still), dumplings, oranges (whichever look best).
We are also going out to our favorite Chinese restaurant for a big feast; I don’t like cooking fish/shellfish at home so we always go out for Lunar New Year dinner celebration.
We are going to my sister’s house for nice potluck — everyone is bringing a different Chinese dish. I’m bringing red envelopes with cash for all kids <18.
I’ll be home depressed because my sister is getting a Year of the Fire Horse grandchild and I am not! When the child arrives I promise to be happy about it but right now still a little jealous.
I have no grandkids but am happy I have great nieces & great nephews.
My kids and my mom are coming next Saturday to celebrate the new year. I am ordering roasted chicken, duck, making fish, pork stew, veggies, noodles. D2 and her H are going to make dumplings at my place. My mom is making new year cake. There will be a lot of red envelopes going around. It’s going to be a full house.
I ordered some decorations from Amazon. D1 already put up hers at her place.

My neighborhood is having a celebration on the 28th which I am attending. My friends and I are actually going to be demonstrating Mahjong.

It is said that Horse would have finished the race in sixth place, but Snake snuck a ride in the equine hoof, unbeknownst to the host. When Snake jumped ashore, she startled Horse. In typical Horse fashion, this majestic creature reared back, and Snake slithered across the finish line first. This story exemplifies how Horse may run with full speed, strength, and intent after goals, promises, and love interests, but can also scare easily. Open your windows to allow good luck to come inside, light up the lanterns with new hopes and aspirations. Happy Lunar New Year!
I cleared out the freezer of all the dumplings and bao. (Sadly not very good any more!) I’ve been taking a very short 6 week intro to Chinese calligraphy and produced this in the last class:

I spent New Year on the big island of Hawaii vacationing with my daughter’s family. Wasn’t very festive but gave the 2 grandsons their lucky red envelopes after they remembered how to wish me Happy New Year in Cantonese. We had dinner at the Canoe House.
Last night I met my niece and a cousin in Manhattan’s Chinatown where we ate at Lanzhou Hand Pulled Noodles restaurant, where you can see the chefs pull the noodles in the glassed-in kitchen. Here are some of the dishes we ate:
Went to a Vietnamese restaurant for lunch today. It was really good. The server was trying to teach us how to say Happy New Year in Vietnamese, but we were hopeless.
