Good Cheap Beer - Suggestions?

So the wine lovers have their thread . . . anyone out there who loves a good expensive beer but has found an almost as good less expensive one?

I love anything by Two-Hearted Ale. It is expensive, imo. Looking for suggestions.

I think all good beers are regional. Never heard of Two Hearted. I love the half dozen beers that we drink, they are fantastic, well priced and all made within a thirty mile radius of my home. Two of them are not bottled…we go straight to the source with a jug.

mmmmmmmmmmmm beer

I personally usually go for an import and my favorite is Kroenburg but for domestic I do like Yuengling. I just can’t do Coors or Bud Light, would rather not have any.

I wish I could drink regular beer, but I get awful headaches from it. Per my friend’s suggestion I tried non-alcohol varieties and, to my surprise, some tasted great, just as good as the “real deal”. Beck’s is a really good one.

I agree, most great beers are locally crafted.

Big Yuengling fan here. I would buy it even it was more expensive, but it is one of the least expensive beers at the grocery store. At times I can get a 24 pack for as little as 14.99 on sale. I usually drink it out of the dark green bottle, but when I do pour it into a clear glass I notice it has a nice dark color.

Buy a case of beer. In the time it takes you to drink the case, brew your own. Much cheaper that way, and pretty good too.

I’m about to graduate and brew 30 bottles of wine. For my first attempt, it will be for cooking purposes - for my sole enjoyment while I’m cooking.

A lot of the better cheap beers are regional, which makes it hard to recommend something.

One of the best cheaper beers I’ve found that is distributed nationally is Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, which is around 12.99-14.99 for 12 bottles. Their other beers are also high quality and similarly highly rated. The company is also very environmentally conscious, diverting 99+% of its waste from landfills.

Similarly, Redhook ESB is pretty good and can range anywhere from $5.69-$8.49 for 6 bottles.

Yuengling is a great regional beer and a favorite of President Obama.

In the Pacific Northwest, Kokanee (brewed in British Columbia) and Olympia aka Oly are similar in taste to Yuengling and reasonably cheap.

In terms of ultra cheap beer, there is always Miller High Life.

If you have a Trader Joe’s near you, they have a policy that allows one to buy single bottles or cans at 1/6th the price of a 6-pack. There may or may not be a sign stating this, but it is an official policy that most of the employees will know about. It’s a great way to try different beers, including some regional and imported beers.

Wow, Yuengling a favorite whenever we can find it.

Where does TJ sell beer?

I go to the ORIGINAL Trader Joes in Pasadena, where they have always sold beer and wine since the very beginning. In fact, besides a Taylor’s butcher (meat market) in the back and a few racks with dried fruit and nuts…that was pretty much it for many many years.

I live in Pennsylvania, which has medieval beer and wine distribution laws, so take that into account.

I have been drinking Yuengling for years, and honestly I don’t get why it is suddenly so hip. It’s OK, but there are tons of regional beers I like a lot better. (And ditto for Rolling Rock.) There aren’t so many cheaper regional beers a like a lot better, though – none of the small regional brands are actually cheap. I like the Victory beers a lot, especially Golden Monkey, but that ain’t cheap at all. (And it goes really fast when I buy a case, at least if I let anyone know I have it.)

My reliable everyday economy beer is a Dutch brand called Oranjeboom. It’s in the same style as Heineken or Grolsch, so pretty much everyone will like it, and I can usually get a case of 16-ounce cans for about $21.

Yuengling’s Tampa brewery is conveniently located across the street from my alma mater, the Univ of South Florida.

Yeungling’s sounds promising. I have to do this myself and I’m female and feel kind of odd about it. My DH is into wine, not beer. Beer is not usually what women drink. But I like the taste of beer. Especially as I get older.

This is the one I adore but it’s 11 or 12 bucks a six-pack and I feel guilty about it (actually made by a brewery called Bell’s):

Bell's Brewery - Eccentric Café & General Store | Kalamazoo, MI | Beers | BeerAdvocate;

I’m in Somerset County, NJ if anyone can suggest a good regional. Will look into Yeungling’s. Love the name.

Yuengling is definitely the best cheap beer I’ve found - yes there are plenty of better regionals out there, but you can’t find them for $4.99 per 6-pack (not on sale) like Yuengling

Let me start by saying I do not like the super-hoppy ales favored by many beer aficionados, nor the sweet, yeasty lagers like Redhook ESB that make up a big portion of what is available. My favorite regional draft beer with some NW availability is Mack and Jack’s, either African Amber or Black Butte Porter.

In bottles, for mid-range beer, I like Trumer Pils, a crisp Austrian style pilsner out of Berkeley. My dark beer choice is Negro Modelo from Mexico. Blue Moon wheat beer with an orange slice is an occasional choice.

Cheap beer? Either Rolling Rock or Corona, both easy to drink cold when you are thirsty. I have a pair of PBR powder skis but it’s more fashion statement than beer choice.

“My dark beer choice is Negro Modelo from Mexico”

Excellent beer and at least in my neighborhood it frequently sells for under $6.50 a six pack.

Just got off the phone with H…You got me going, tonight its lbeer and chili fries at the local watering hole.

I don’t drink beer but DH, who used to be a Budweiser guy, loves Yuengling and will buy nothing else now.

We like Blue Moon…especially the seasonal variety packs that we get at Sams Club.

:)

Buy an orange as well and add a slice to each glass.

If you don’t mind cans, “Simple Times” lager from Trader Joes ( $3.39/ 6 pk) is our favorite. Reminds us of Spaten German beer & the 6+ % alcohol is a nice bonus. Costco had Spaten Octoberfest cases last week, not cheap but worth the price.

Kirkland Pale Ale from Costco is excellent. Not sure about the national distribution on it, though. I, too, like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. I’m also a fan of Sam Adams Boston Lager. This one has a nice fuller body, unlike most lagers that are on the “wimpy” side. I can usually find Sierra Nevada and Sam Adams on sale and Kirkland beer is affordably priced.
