Good movies on streaming Netflix

Thanks for starting this thread.

Not a movie but we have been watching the series Numbers. About 2 brothers, one is an FBI agent the other a super mathematician supposedly teaching at Cal something that is supposed to be Cal Tech.

The math brother helps the FBI brother solve crimes that he is able to figure out patterns of the crimes based on math.
Entertaining show.

In the Arts category -My Architect

And, a British series since 1960s chronicling the lives of a variety of children who have been followed every seven years.
The latest movie called 56 and Up will soon be released in theaters.

Netflix has this series ( I’ve seen on PBS for years)
First movie is Seven UP

Fun Numb3rs fact:

“Ironically, David Krumholtz (who failed Algebra I twice and hated math in school) plays a mathematician, while Dylan Bruno (who graduated from MIT with a math-heavy engineering degree) plays the math-challenged FBI agent.”

and I have to add Doctor Who to the TV series to watch. Season 1 (2005) … I thought it was okay but my daughter told me to stick with it … Season 2-4 … a new doctor - David Tennant … Season 5-7 … a new doctor - Matt Smith … I’m hooked!

Stephen Moffat is headwriter of *Doctor Who/I and co-creator of Sherlock. If you like Sherlock, don’t discount the weirdness that is Doctor Who. The scripts are great.

Add Walk on Water-Israeli made movie-

^^Ooh, I loved Walk on Water. And DD got me hooked on Dr. Who, except that I have only seen random episodes. I spend all day at my desk, so sitting on my computer to watch a show or movie at night doesn’t really occur to me. But when DD is home on break, she’ll bring her laptop into my bedroom, which is more fun.

Just read NY Times article"A Drama’s Streaming Premiere". HOUSE OF CARDS-about Netflix’s Adaptation of BBC’s TV series (apparently very popular with Netflix viewers)

Look for all 13 episodes, starring Kevin Spacey and Robin Wright-on feb 1st. (Marathon Streaming)

I love this thread. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. I am new to Netflix and have been disappointed so far. My purpose was to catch the beginning of some series I now watch or to watch series I missed.

The Good Wife, The Closer, Castle, and Harry’s Law are three series I can think of off the top of my head that are not available. I think I’ll check out Numbers, first. Thanks, and keep those suggestions coming. :)

Not sure what I missed with Queen of Versailles. We’re talking about the timeshare tycoon and family? I could relate to nothing except sitting through a timeshare presentation to get free tickets to SeaWorld! Personally, I could not believe the level of greed. How out of touch…“what’s the name of my driver from Hertz?”

bluejay, I don’t think you missed the point at all. ^^

I just went to add Walk on Water to my instant queue, but it’s only on disc…

Used to be streaming ;(

My daughter had me watch this simple but touching film about an Orthodox Jewish woman and her Muslim friend who are teachers. She grew up in a multi-cultual neightborhood with similar surroundings. We knew these women in a way. I liked it. “Arranged”
<a href=“Movies - Review - Arranged - The New York Times”>Movies - Review - Arranged - The New York Times;
Bluejay, In Queen of Versailles, I couldn’t like the family, thought Mr. Seigal was very unlikable and didn’t feel sorry for him at all. He had more than most, I dont’ know if he did any real charity work, his own children from another marriage were poor. I did feel sorry for his help, they were working but not seeing their own children and family. He is back on his feet again despite his banking issues and his wife seemed like she would like a reality show (said she liked being filmed) so who knows?

“Nowhere in Africa” was also a gem I missed initially.

On Netflix: Broken Flowers by Jim Jarmusch starring Bill Murray. Also starring Murray is Lost in Translation. If you like Downton Abbey try the original: Upstairs, Downstairs. I also liked their original series, Lillyhammer, starring Steven Van Zandt of the Sopranos and E Street Band. They also have a new, original series that I’m going to try with Kevin Spacey, starting Feb 1, House of Cards.

Let me also pit in a word for Hulu+. It has the Criterion Collection, which used to be on Netflix. If you want the classics, e.g., Kurosawa, Truffaut, Bergman, Fellini, and the like, it’s worth $7.95 a month. I think you can get a free trial.

Netflix last night: Possession with Gwyneth Paltrow , based on the A.S. Byatt book titled, Possession: A Romance. I’d be remiss not to put in a plug for the book, which is even better (much better) and the selection for February of the CC reading thread. Both worth a watch/read.

Second Debruns’ recommendation of “Nowhere in Africa.” I liked it so much I read the memoir (also recommended.)

DD and I watched a sweet, quirky movie called, “Griff the Invisible.” We really liked it.

Katliamom, I was just thinking after reading the review again to get the book. It’s under 5.00 on Amazon if I buy it from another seller. What they went through was facinating, scary and very moving.
