Good movies on streaming Netflix

We watched “Broken Flowers” the other night…not a fan! I just found it slow and the ending unsatisfying. I saw “Arranged” a long time ago and recommend it. I liked the plot and also that it was set in NY; I grew up in NY and love getting a taste of “home” in movies :)

OK, for some, Jarmusch is an acquired taste, as is his Finnish idol (available on Hulu), Aki Kaurismaki.

But if you’re in a New York state of mind there’s Metropolitan, Whit Stillman. You’ll see from where they stole Gossip Girl.

Jarmusch is I think interesting, but I don’t love his movies. Have watched them on and off since I saw* Down by Law* a million years ago. Just finished Queen of Versailles. It was okay, but really I’m not a big documentary fan. The biggest surprise is that she good be smart enough to have studied engineering at RIT and still be such a ditz!

Ohhhhh - so many good suggestions!!! YAY!!! Thanks everyone  - going to load up my instant queue again.

Great thread. Has anyone seen The Infidel? It is our recent favorite “find.”(comedy about a British Muslim who discovers he was a adopted and actually born Jewish) Highly recommend it.

@Lakemom: I introduced my son to Numbers also and he was immediately hooked. Fun show.

Lakemom, thanks for introducing me to Numbers. I’ve been watching it all weekend. :)

My pleasure  We were getting to the end of all the Monk episodes (also on Netflix) and luckily now have a whole new set of shows to watch with Numb3rs.

We just watched Bernie last nite from this thread’s suggestion. Very interesting and well done (Jack Black and Shirley MacLaine are great) I had no idea it was based on a true story.

I’m a big Whit Stillman fan. Also highly recommend Barcelona and The Last Days of Disco.

I just finished watching the final episode of Battlestar Galactica. Still feeling teary. :)

I see that Bill Forsythe’s movie Gregory’s Girl is on streaming, although the even more wonderful Local Hero is not.

@Consolation

Alas, the Last Days of Disco is available only on DVD. Barcelona streams only–finally, there’s one–on Comcast’s Streampix. His latest, Damsels in Distress is available as a streaming rental.

I wonder how he supports himself, having made only four (excellent) movies in about 25 years, none of which was a blockbuster. He’s not independently wealthy, I don’t think. His Wikipedia bio says he sold his apartment ($50,000 in the late 80s) to finance Metroplitian.

And here’s a good resource to check the availability of a film or TV show: www.canistreamit.it It’s also available as an iPhone or android app.

I just saw a very funny political satire – In the Loop – I saw it on Sundance Channel, but it’s available for streaming on Netflix. If you liked ‘Wag the Dog’ you’ll like this. One of the better political comedies I’ve seen in a while.

Trying to get to many of these great suggestions.
Thanks to all of you who recommended " Jiro- Dreams of Sushi" what a wonderful movie, well made, and the Japanese Tuna / fish market is memorable! Loved it

Just binge watched American Horror Story and House of Cards - I am a fan of both!!! Ready for season two of House of Cards RIGHT NOW!!!

I know they aren’t movies, but they are on streaming and so worth the time!!!

We really enjoyed “Butter”. Kind of a light-hearted “Election”, except about butter carving sculpture contests.

I want to cancel, cannot find anything…

The Extra Man! Kevin Kline should have been nominated for an Academy Award for this film.

I binge-watched the first season of 24 late last week. Had me shrieking at the tv sometimes. :)

Miami, I really cannot believe that you can’t find ANYTHING to watch on streaming netflix.

I am going to check some short movies on snagfilms, maybe I will have more luck. I will work on cancelling netfix, we stopped trying, seems to be useless. I am not that picky, I can watch the same over and over, I can watch the same 7 movies every week, or the same 14 movies every 2 weeks. I imagine that I end up doing that, searching for something is taking too much time with very low success rate.

Thanks for the recommendations. We watch a lot of mysteries:

Poirot (my favorite)
Foyle’s War
Wallander (the one with Brannaugh)
Prime Suspect
Hammish McBeth
Inspector Lewis
Inspector Lynley

We also liked Doc Martin, Lilyhammer, The Wire

Right now watching the British version of House of Cards. Interesting comparison with the just released netflix production.

OMG – there’s a Hammish MacBeth on Netflix?

I actually sort of agree with Miami for once. There are a million movies I missed when they first came out, and none of them are on streaming. There are a million classic movies I want to see again and they aren’t on streaming either! Lots of them are on Netflix DVD, and for a long time we had DVDs instead of stream. Our younger son persuaded us to switch, and it’s true we weren’t watching the DVDs hanging around the house, but I’m very frustrated by whats available. 90% of what we watch is either on Hulu or we pay for via Amazon. Right now I’m not interested in another TV show. I’m interested in good movies - not documentaries and not too depressing or too violent.
