i really need to butter up my teacher for a good recommendation so i think giving presents around the holiday season would be a good way to do it. i’m a rising junior. i don’t know what to do though… everything i think of seems cheesy. she says that the presents she’s liked the most have had to do with history. any ideas?

A book? Find out what branch of history she finds most intriguing (or what particular subject she likes most), and then give her something relating to that subject.

Pick a book from here and you will little likely pick wrong.

Get her The Communist Manifesto. Relates pretty well to US History :]

When I was a student-teacher, I had a student give every teacher a $10 gift card to Barnes & Noble and a recommendation for a book that they thought I would like. It was a really thoughtful gesture and I will always remember it because it didn’t seem conniving, just touching. It also included a nice note about what they had liked and what they most looked forward to.

Also, because every teacher received the gift (trust me they compare notes) and a different note it showed that you took time. Another thing that you should think about is giving a small gift in addition to a thank you note after the rec. is complete.
