Hey. As an international seeking fin aid I dont know if there are any colleges I could consider as “safeties”…
I was wondering if there what colleges there are that are somewhat generous with aid and not as hard to get into as the top LACs (Williams.Amherst, etc) or universities (Harvard,Pton, etc).
I have found some colleges like Mt. Holyoke that give aid to intels and arent as selective…
Any others you might have heard of ?

WPI, Lehigh, IUB, ERAU…

^I second WPI.

BEREA COLLEGE!! It is a hidden gem and I am happy to be admitted there. It provides tuition scholarship to all of its admitted students and free money for room and board by engaging all of its students in the Work Program unique to Berea College. (working for 10 to 15 hours per week within the semesters is worth it). The work is designated to you by the college. Technically, the amount it spends for each of its students is comparable to Williams College. So there is no burden on the family; just the one-time deposit of $2,250 while you accept the offer of admission. Besides, the college will provide you with a laptop so that you don’t have to buy one.

Having said all these, it is necessary to say that Berea is the #1 regional Liberal arts college in the south of the US according to US news and World report (top comprehensive college for a Bachelor’s degree). So it is quite selective. The mean SAT scores and college requirements for Berea in the Collegeboard and in the College’s own website can be misleading. Those may be sufficient for local candidates, but Intels have to be more than competitive as so many Intels apply each year to Berea. A 2100+ in the SAT can be a benchmark.

If you can afford to pay $12,000,then other colleges such as WPI and Ohio Wesleyan will welcome you.

“If you can afford to pay $12,000,then other colleges such as WPI and Ohio Wesleyan will welcome you.”

Ohio Wesleyan U is incredibly popular among international students due to its generosity with merit aid to them. With less than 40% admission rate for international students only, it can hardly be considered a safety by anyone. If your new SATs are well above 2100 and you can pay at least $12,000, then you may consider it a safety for an international student.

Clark University (WPI isnt really a safety - u wont get aid unless u have above 1300)

LEHIGH?! safety?! they have 300 ADMISSABLE international students and give aid to only 15 of those?

and btw, this 12,000 from WPI will increase to 15000 next year…the adcom told me (sorry for so many posts)

There are the admission rates in 2005 for international students only for the schools that were listed above (according to Peterson’s):

Lehigh: 19%
Ohio Wesleyan: 38%
WPI: 68%
Clark: 48%

Hope this helps!

but the financial aid admission rate is completely different… for example… lehigh has an admission rate less than 5% for international students

Hi guys, I hope to remind you that one shouldn’t just base admissions using the SAT as a benchmark. Do remember that admissions committee look at candidates as a whole person, i.e. your class grades, final exams like A levels or the IB matters in addition to your ECs, recommendation reports. Just because you’ve done less than stellar on your SAT does not mean you are condemned to the lower tier colleges. Assess your chances carefully. Lastly, all the best! :D

haha can i advertise my college shamelessly?

CONNECTICUT COLLEGE!

okay it’s not exactly a safety… (unless you’re the type of applicant well-qualified form HYPAW) but it’s definitely less selective than the colleges u mention and no less stingy.

For intels who need a lot of financial aid, i doubt there is any real safeties.

I hope someone can tell me i’m wrong…

not safeties like those u are damn sure u will get in no matter what. but most likely there are colleges that are well within your reach, if you are willing to look at the ‘lower-tier’ ones that is. then again, as u go lower, u also find that colleges that offer intel aid become more rare and the aid they give also become less generous…

exactly…

woebegone- i didnt know that you are a camel!
yes, conn coll LOVES international students, and is pretty generous with aid. its not a true ‘safety’ for many people, but if you are looking at schools like williams and amherst, conn is a wonderful back up (i would say just about everyone at conn looked at either amherst or williams for their reach school)

haha i’m not yet a camel… only matriculating in 2007 coz of my national service obligation

and indeed amherst and williams were my reach schools but they waitlisted - and will eventually reject - me, oh well.

Thanks a lot for all the suggestions. as luck charms said there are no safeties for intels… especially those in seek of aid.
Does anyone have any comments about Northeastern University ?
according to petersons they :
For fall 2004: 899 international students applied, 557 were accepted, 99 enrolled. Students can start in fall or winter.
For fall 2004 (estimated), 94 international students on campus received college administered financial aid ($18,711 average).
Oh…and another thing…Im from venezuela a country that is that not as represented as say China or Indian or other European Countries, could that help me in anyway in the admission process ?

divide 94 by 4 do get the no. for Intls seeking aid admitted each yr

actually at WPI it is very very very rare that grant might exceed 30000…
but technically if u just get even 25-30k just in schol then its a good package since with other univs also the grant is usually this much only the remaining ‘Financial Aid’ is usually a loan, work study, family contribution…so if u are good overall and want to do Engg then WPI is a good bet…
