My SAT Score is 1740.
Critical Reading 530
Math 700
Writing 510
Given that I’m an international Student, Is my SAT good enough for schools like say rice university or notredame university? If not, what SAT Score is ‘good’ enough ?
Thanks :D.

The higher the better. 2100+ would be ideal. Sorry, but your scores aren’t going to help you in this state.

If you’re a Korean or Chinese you’ll need way higher score (at least 2000+) for the schools you’ve mentioned. If your country is not that much represented in US schools you might get admitted to those schools with 1900+. But still, depending on your essay and application SAT scores are flexible.

i second tetrisfan. Anything less than 2000, and you’ll have a verrrry low chance at Rice. Aim for 2100+.

Dont fret, scores almost always go up when you take the SAT the second time. :)

ow…haha… that was my first SAT so yea… i’ll try harder next time…
thanks for the info…

P.S. I’m not Korean/Chinese. I’m Indonesian (the one that got bombed recently) :D.

This will be really helpful. You should write your essay about this. :)

Just don’t write about the fact that you’re happy about it.

Write your essay about it only if it affected you!

It’s good enough I think. Cos Indonesians’ first language isnt English, hence getting 500+ for the verbal and writing sections can be considered good. However, 700 for math is considered low/average. Try getting 750+ for the math and you’re set. Dont worry about getting 2000+ in your SAT as it’s not that important. There are many Americans who cant get 600s on their SAT verbal and writing. Finally, I know some international students who got into Stanford and Harvard with scores less than 400 on the SAT verbal.

At least it’s better than mine. My mom surprised me with the SAT exam (she didn’t tell me until the night before…) and I got 1450… really. But I am studying for it now and will probably take the ACT too. Oh, and English is my first language, and I’m half Chinese. Yep, I’ve got no chance against any of you. HAHA.

Don’t let be discouraged by some 17 year olds…
I know lots of internationals who got into ivy league with a 1800+ score.
And rice/reed have even lower SAT “requirements” I guess!
My advice- rock the ACT/SAT2 and write outstanding essays!!!

Oh btw, I wasn’t trying to discourage you. A 1740 is a very good score but sometimes SATs aren’t all that. Even some US people can’t get that score
You’ve got to remember that they look at all the aspects of your application… essays, recommendations etc. Of course it’s better to have a high score, but remember, everyone in CollegeConfidential are usually kids with higher stats. Anyway, keep studying (you can see what happened with I didn’t :P) and maybe try the ACT too. :)

Well… how come the average american student can’t make 600CR but international kids can cope with that? Why is that?

The average American doesn’t go to Notre Dame, Rice or the Ivies (schools mentioned in this thread). In fact, unless an international was either well off or reasonably qualified and somewhat prepared for the SAT (where prep/familiarity with the test really helps), they would probably not even take the SAT. It’s not a fair comparison.

That makes sense. Thank you, Agneisse, for the clarification.

Are you an international yourself?

Quasi-international - spent most of my life overseas, but green carded with 2.5 years of American HS (:

What do you mean " the average american doesn’t go to Notre Dame, Rice or the Ivies"?

It means that Notre Dame, Rice and the Ivies are not schools to which average american students go. They are very selective.
