Is an 1880-1990 SAT score good for the University of Virginia?

The average SAT for admitted students for the class of 2016 was 1395 / 1600. So, no.

The U. says that the difficulty of your high school classes and your grades in high school are a more important indicator of college success than standardized test scores.

Almost everyone admitted to UVA from my high school in northwestern VA had below a 2000 on the SAT. That doesn’t speak for other aspects of their applications, but it’s not like any of them had major hooks. It’s not all that important. The upper end of your scale is pretty solid.

Talk to your GC and see what successful candidates have looked like from your hs in the past two years. It really doesn’t matter what candidates from Fermats school were accepted with, unless you happen to go to the same school.

Keep in mind that not all SATs/ACTs with the same total/composite are created equal. ‘Lopsided scores’, where you have a significantly higher score in one section then another, as opposed to fairly evenly spaced scores may or may not be a factor. UVa doesn’t look at the total SAT score or ACT composite, they are looking at section scores.

Are you OOS? If so, I would strongly suggest re-taking the exam or trying the ACT. Even if you are IS you might consider trying to take it again; UVA is very competitive, and you want to submit the best possible application you can.

The OP is international student. I was not aware of that when I answered last night. I agree with jc40. I would encourage you to try the ACT if you haven’t, or take the SAT again. Also to note, based on your previous posts, UVa does not offer need based aid to international students. There are three merit aid opportunities for international students, however they do require exceptional academic records and scores:

thanks for the replies everyone. wish me well on my SATs this weekend

Blueiguana, how is 800/800/780 looked at with a 3.5 GPA, good ECs, trust me, good Essays and 800 in MATH2.

fatherofm - Respectfully, I don’t offer opinions on chances. Those are certainly strong scores for any university. I’m sure you know that UVa uses holistic admissions and unlike some universities it’s not just a stats game. Based on your other post in the forum I’m afraid my response is going to frustrate you. That is not my intent. I would suggest having your student speak with their GC and see what successful candidates from their school have looked like. This will give you a rough idea.

Best of luck to your student.

No it won’t frustrate me, I hope you realize how confusing this whole business of admissions is. She is not banking on UVA. Not because she doesn’t like it, not because it is not cheap(in state), just because there is no proper information to guide us(eg. CDS). She will apply some where else ED/EA and hope to get there. I hope there is a top 20 school who can accept her.
