Anyone have any first or secondhand experience with a “therapeutic boarding school” that has actually made a difference? I’m at my wits end again with my teen. I think rather than a “break 'em down” wildnerness camp type situation, that a boarding school that encourages mutual respect and offers a lot of structure and counseling would be a better fit. Many of those I’ve investigated are scarily vague about what exactly their daily schedule is like.

I know nothing about boarding schools, but I just wanted to give you some {{{{{{{hugs}}}}}}}. I’m sorry that you’re having such a tough time with your teen right now. I hope things improve for you soon.

I believe Strom King (NYS), Berkshire (MA), Suffield (CT) and Cushing (MA), although not specifically therapeutic schs, offer special therapeutic programs.

Also, check out Darrow (sp?). And TABS (a boarding sch directory).

Good luck.

A friend sent her daughter to the Fenster School in Arizona for a year: http://www.fenster-school.com/. While it did not do a 100% turn-around in the girl’s academic issues, they all felt it was a worthwhile experience.

A friend of my daughters attended a school that helped him get a handle on anger management, I believe it was in colorado
It worked- he came back to school, attended college & is now a teacher at the same high school
:)

I will see if I can find out what it was- it might have been one of the wilderness type schools though

I have experience with this and will PM you.

One of the VT victims was a graduate of a “military” school in PA, I believe…credited it with giving him a “second chance.”

I need a good therapeutic spa.

The Hyde School is amazing.

A friend’s child was completely transformed – for the better – by a year at a place in Calif. near . . . . Idlewild? Lake Arrowhead? someplace east of LA; sorry I don’t know the name. It was really expensive, but worth it.

A friend sent her daughter to the Montana Academy (in Montany) for one year, and she was completely turned around. However, they only take clients through educational consultants.

There is a big company that administers many of these schools, Aspen Education Group, Inc. They can guide you, too.

Montana Academy is excellent, but very therapeutic. Hyde is not good.

Like MomofWildChild, I am well versed in this field. I will PM you.

I would love to read the discussion and hope some of it can be done openly rather than through pms. I am interested in finding something for the summer on the east coast.

If you are interested in a wilderness program for the summer (quite expensive) check out Second Nature Georgia. Most of the therapeutic boarding school programs are for 14-24 month terms.

How about SOARS in NC? How helpful are outward bound programs for boys with less than stellar social skills and frustration/anger problems. Perhaps it is more of a “this is hard so I am going to quit” problem

Outward Bound and therapeutic wilderness programs are quite different. I have heard mainly good things about Outward Bound, but it is not a program for a teen with “issues”.

I have heard wonderful things about the Hyde school in Maine

Mhny, I bet it was CEDU, which went belly up a few years ago. CEDU was in Running Springs, CA, about 15 miles up the hill from San Bernardino and 25 mintues from Lake Arrowhead.

When CEDU closed I heard it was a disaster. No one had notice and all the kids had to leave immediately. The CEDU program included Ascent (wilderness program), Boulder Creek Academy, and Northwest Academy , all in northern Idaho, and CEDU High School in Running Springs.

Footnote: Chabad Lubavitch purchased the huge campus and turned it into a camp.
