man, my mom got me all worried on college and i am very scared that i am already screwed - no ecs - no volunteer - only As and Bs. am i screwed?
It depends on what kind of college you want to go to. You definitely won’t get into top-tier colleges, but with decent grades, test scores, LORs, and essays, you should probably be fine at a lower-tier college.
I got my very first F this year, my senior year. It’s not written in stone since the semester is not over yet, and I think I can bring it up. But generally speaking, students with a low GPA should (of course) manage their grades, but it is just as important to do lots of volunteer and extra curriculars that make you unique and set you apart from other students. Even if you don’t think you can commit to one extra curricular activity, I would stay start exploring as soon as possible. You can retake the classes you failed online with the help of your counselor.
My GPA isn’t stellar, but I have lots of extra curriculars and have done lots of volunteer work, both strongly related to the major I am trying to pursue. I recently got accepted into Purdue University. After looking at the stats (GPA and SAT/ACT scores) of students who got accepted in Purdue University on College Confidential. These students are way more academically accomplished than I am. The gap between their scores and my scores is crazy. It made me wonder why on Earth Purdue University accepted me into their Aeronautical Engineering Program (ranked 6th in the nation). I think it has to do with what I do outside of school. This is how important volunteer work and extra curriculars are.
Find out why you are failing. Have you been doing the required reading and homework assignments? Do you need to stay for tutoring? Be honest with your self and get help.
First, worry if you’ll meet hs graduation requirements.
If you don’t figure out what is going wrong, then yes, you are screwed.
Take a look at this:
Got 4 Fs of final grades in my 8th grade and almost had to repeat the grade (got my parents to ask for change the two of the grades so I could transfer out to a public school and not to repeat the grade). Not doing well in HS. Went to a community college in mid to late 20s (while learning English as second language) to get a new start of GPA, transferred to and graduated from an adult 4 year college, got a job and enrolled in a MBA program within a top 15 university with tuition paid by the employer. So start in my mid-30s, I was doing as well as my coworkers, one of them even went to an ivy. Some are born as the Tortoise(s) and others are the Hare(s). You just need to recognize who you are and do as the old fable tells you to do in order to succeed. No you are not totally screwed as much as I did when I was your age.
If you keep getting Fs then yes, as @bopper stated, you’re screwed imo. Take @amNotarobot for example though, going to a top university right off the bat is not for everyone. Things will work themselves out.
