Gould Academy anyone?

What do people know about Gould Academy in Maine? Apparently they’re starting up – or starting to seriously focus on – a boys’ lacrosse program, but I’d like to know more and this is one place I thought might have some perspectives to share. I’m asking because I recently got an e-mail, wearing my HS lacrosse coach hat, encouraging me to direct young men to Gould Academy:

* Know a current or rising high school boys’ lacrosse player that is seeking a strong independent boarding school? Does he want to help build a winning tradition? Does he love to ski or snowboard in the winter? We’ve got the school for you!

Gould is a co-educational college preparatory high school serving 240 boarding and day students. Located on the eastern edge of the White Mountains, Gould teaches the traditional values that one would expect to find in a rural Northern New England village like Bethel, Maine. At the same time, Gould connects its students with the whole world beyond Bethel through cutting edge technology, a diverse student body from around the world, and programs that take many of our students to distant points on the globe.

Please consider forwarding this email on to a young man who might be interested in helping to build a strong lacrosse tradition at a great college prep boarding school in Northern New England. We are currently considering applications from students in grades 9-12 and Post-Graduates as well. *

P.S.: Interestingly enough, according to its web site, it was founded in 1835 (on an endowment of $842, the size of the estate of its founder and namesake) as a co-ed boarding school. Yes, 1835: co-ed boarding. That’s an interesting bit of history.

It is one that has been recommended by our school to my son.
They thought he would like it because he likes the “adventure” kinds of things. I’m going to shoot you a PM.

I attended Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine a looooooong time ago- and when we weren’t out slaying dinosaurs or creating fire to keep our caves warm, we competed with Gould in many sports, I just looked in my old yearbooks, and checked it out, and we didn’t play them in LAX so they probably didn’t have a team back then.
I loved going to BS school in Maine, if you want to be near an urban setting it probably isn’t for you, but if you love the outdoors and beautiful surroundings, not to mention great skiing, check out some of the smaller schools in Maine and NH.

Gould is an excellent option if your child has a strong interest in competitive skiing or snowboarding and also wants a traditional boarding school experience. In contrast to some of the newer ski “academies”, Gould is a prep school first, so even if you stop competing, you can stay on and get a great education. There is an excellent support system in place from teachers and coaches and the school accommodates competition travel well. Bethel is a beautiful Maine town and Gould is right in the center.

^^Ditto above. We know a family with a competitive snowboarder and he is digging it. Sorry, can’t help on lax, though.

My brother really wants to go to Gould, but my mom doesn’t want him to board. We do in fact have a close family friend he could stay with, who originally tried to convince me that I should go to Gould! But it just wasn’t the school I was looking for. Bethel is the picture perfect Maine town, and Gould is a picture perfect New England boarding school. Big brick buildings, grass lawns, and a great community of students and teachers, not to mention good academics.
