Governor Closes all Minnesota Schools Next Monday! How Cold Will it Be in Your State?

Dammit we are right around the coldest it is going to get while I will be awake today, and I just finished my workout and am all sweaty so now I can’t go outside and feel it. :frowning: Or I could, but I’d have to be really stupid.

I might do it anyway. We’re boiling water, I want to try the water trick again.

Ema the boiling water into a cloud thing works now! I boiled a whole pot and kept throwing them.

My roommates and fiance looked at me after one glass, said “you’re on your own!”, and went back inside. I happily amused myself for another minute and a half before it got too cold.

My fiance thinks I am nuts, but we are so doing it. I got my boots on and by the time the water boils I’ll be dry enough to throw a coat on. He was afraid we’d break glasses so I found some styrofoam cups.

I keep telling him the young adult years are all about doing all the things your mother never would have let you do, and he tried to tell me I’m not a young adult anymore!

ETA: IT WORKED THAT IS SO COOL!

Ema: Smiled at your post. Of course you’re still a young adult.

It’s all relative. ;)

PSH! My mother would’ve been the one coming up with the ideas. I’m sure she’s doing something much more fun.

Thanks for the advice bclintock. I was able to get my car to start this morning, but just barely I think. If it had been 5 degrees colder I don’t think it would have happened. Tomorrow morning is supposed to be slightly warmer here than this morning was so I think it will be fine, but I’ll make sure I get one of those in preparation of another cold storm like this.

Here it’s -12 air temp now, looks like it’s supposed to stay around that tonight and go back above 0 tomorrow afternoon.

I went outside and stood around like an idiot for a minute and a half. I then returned and sent looks of pity at my barn cats huddling in the corner of the garage. If my mother weren’t allergic, they would so be cuddling with me by my furnace.

I’m glad to see some people are finding the fun in such frigid weather!

I spent about 20 minutes out there cleaning off the snow and ice from my car so I don’t have to do it in the morning. When not facing the wind, it wasn’t so bad. My coat got all crunchy though. My boots are great- my feet were still warm and toasty. My fingers were starting to feel it in spite of my gloves. It was really just my face that was getting quite cold. I’m glad that’s done though. I will have to go into work tomorrow although my son has a “cold” day off school.

I really want to go see how our hottub is doing… but I don’t want to bundle up again!

Young adult is under 30, or maybe 35! I brought in my German shepherd who lives in the garage. I am happy to report she is doing great. Just sleeps in the kitchen on the extra carpet piece. Getting her back out in a few days may be more of a challenge :)

Most schools in northern Indiana canceled earlier today for tomorrow. DOE even says they won’t have to make up these 2 days! That is done very rarely. Most counties in top half of Indiana have no-travel allowed except for emergencies.

I don’t want H to attempt plowing tomorrow with the wind chills (no cab on tractor), so it looks like Wednesday is the earliest for anyone getting out. I’m betting no school Wed. either.

We arrived from 11 amazing days in Cozumel to a freezing Minnesota and a broken furnace!

We got lucky that my in-laws stopped by in the morning to check on the house and called the repair service. The furnace is going to be repaired in about an hour. We are using space heaters, fireplace and an oven to make our stay tolerable for now.

The kids are happy that their school district, that NEVER closes for inclement weather, decided to stay closed tomorrow.

I’m 24, I still have time! He will be 30 in T minus 9 months hehe. I told him to stop being a bitter old man and come throw boiling water with me, and he did. :)

Is my brain even fully developed yet!? I thought that was 25. I have 6 months. Plenty of time to build an igloo.

I actually wasn’t very cold, but I’d just finished 45 minutes on the elliptical like 15 minutes before, so my body was still warm. It was kind of hard to breathe though, and I could feel a latent sort of chill ominously hanging in the air-- I can understand how people can freeze to death in this kind of weather. My mouth and lungs felt like they dried out and were sticking. So I ate some snow and came inside. :)

ETA Coming back from Mexico to THIS is AWFUL!!!

I’m going back to school tomorrow… Bus, train, bus, then bus to DC, then taxi.

Real feel will be around -10 :D

I saw a beautiful photo essay made by a mom of the soap bubbles she blew with her son in the cold. One of the most magical things I have ever seen.

We also have more cold-weather gear and houses that are better built to withstand extreme cold. It’s going down to the low single digits tonight in parts of the South where many people have poorly insulated or uninsulated homes, heating systems are not made for those kinds of temperatures, plumbing is at great risk of freezing due to inadequate insulation, and most people have not nearly as many warm hats, mittens, scarves, sweaters, warm winter coats, long underwear, etc. as the typical Minnesotan. So I’m not sure who’s worse off.

I know a Carleton College grad who tells me the saying there was, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” I don’t entirely agree with that; I think this extreme cold counts as bad weather. Still, there’s some truth to it. Cold weather is much worse if you’re unprepared for it, and more important than the absolute temperature is how well prepared you are for the temperature you have.

I haven’t read this entire thread, but the bad clothing rings true. The only people who look stupid are the people who refuse to dress appropriately. Now granted, days like today are truly dangerous because your body doesn’t necessarily recognize anything colder than -30, but those colder temps can cause serious frostbite in minutes. Stupidness comes from being unprepared and with today’s fabrics, it’s pretty easy to not look like the little brother in A Christmas Story when it comes to finding seriously warm outerwear.

My issue is I like fresh air… and it’s just too damn cold to even crack a window without your window hinge freezing. Definitely helps to have a gas fireplace. But other than my husband’s company/job, I have no idea why I still live here.

Carleton College (in Minnesota) still had classes today!

Is the Midwest warmer than the South Pole yet?

Not cold at all! Sunny & 75!
