Governor Closes all Minnesota Schools Next Monday! How Cold Will it Be in Your State?

Thanks for that, Sally. I’ve only driven through Atlanta at like 4 AM in the morning but I can imagine those huge highways being a nightmare.

Atlanta traffic sucks…not to mention the crazy drivers… :open_mouth:

Ugh…the weather was miserable today! Had to wear heals in order to not let my office pants touch the wet ground. Cold, wet rain coming from every direction. It was a hassle going between buildings. But I conquered the day! :D/

SnowDay2014 #NeverForget

<a href=“19 Startling Photos Of The Snow In Florida”>http://www.buzzfeed.com/ariellecalderon/19-startling-photos-of-the-snow-in-florida</a></p>

Sounds like very poor planning by a lot of people, and I’m not talking about any of you. This storm was not unexpected. They’d been predicting it for several days. I know because we have a home in the affected area and our community, and our caretaker, were getting ready for it last weekend!

There are behind the scenes stories that don’t make the news. The mayor and the governor are not exactly the best of buddies shall we say. Besides their political party differences, the city of Atlanta has its own internal corruption/ favoritism/cronie-ism and the governor has his good ol boy network , and it was worsened by the mayor’s anger that the baseball team is leaving downtown to head to the 'burbs. So it’s likely that not I ly did they not work well together to coordinate the city and State’s responses, they were each watching their budgets and playing chicken. They both lost.

The earlier reports had the bad weather hitting south of the metro area , and we did get more than expected. Add to that people mock Atlanta for rolling up its sidewalks when one snowflake hits the ground. The biggest mistake, IMO, was their not proactively salting and sanding the roads. But they have something like only 30 trucks, which can’t cover much territory. The city’s focus has been on cleaning up the school/ education scandals and they just don’t adequately budget for a lower frequency occurrence. But they blew it. Big time. And they looked foolish and defensive (especially the mayor) in news conferences. He then went into damage control mode.

Today they put a civil emergency in place to keep cars off the road til noon when it should begin to warm up. But then they announced that the DOT was organizing meet up points for people to retrieve their abandoned cars. This was set for 10 am. The communication needs to be improved.

Just heard we are expecting 4-8 inches on Saturday. I will NOT have my AWD yet and I have an appointment at 1pm with a florist for the wedding. I am hoping it will come late enough that we’ll be able to get to the appointment and back before it gets bad… am thinking I might send fiance for groceries on Friday so we can stay home Sunday morning just in case. This storm shouldn’t be hell and damnation but if we really get 4-8 that’s enough reason to stay off the roads until they are good and cleared, and if we get closer to 8 I might have a hard time getting out of my subdivision until it’s cleared Monday night.

My electric bill doubled last month, and I’m sure it has something to do with the weather but I can’t figure out what because we have gas heat , and while our gas bill is higher than usual too it hasn’t gone up at anywhere near the rate of the electricity. The only thing I can think of is I have been running a space heater next to my desk for a couple hours in the evenings and probably the better part of the day on Sundays. I will be very sorry to give it up but I can’t justify an extra $100 a month for that! Between that electric bill and our raised gas bill I could almost power a second house.

I saw the weather cast this morning and thought of you downstate people. I was talking to someone from Muskegon yesterday and he said he’s never seen this much snow.

On the electric bill. Sometimes you will have a spike in your bill that you can’t explain. About once a year I have an unexplained higher bill and I can’t figure out where I’ve been using more electricity. But between the space heater and Christmas, that may be it.

deb, my best friend lives in Houghton (goes to Tech). He shared a status a few days ago when they officially got 200 inches of snow. WHAT?! lol

My H’s freshman year at Tech they broke the snowfall record. 390 inches. <a href=“The Keweenaw Snow Thermometer”>http://www.pasty.com/snow/index.html</a></p>

The great thing about Houghton is that they know how to clear the roads. Unlike your area :frowning:

How is that even possible? 390 inches?

Is that, like, over a decade??

In the whole winter season, not all at once.

Lol! H said it snowed every single day for 90 days that year.

Romani, the good news is that they will have enough snow for winter carnival this year. Some of the years my S was there they had to import snow and it was so warm the statues melted within days.

Right… I wonder what they’re at now. This was before the last snow hit.

My parents live in Traverse City and the snow is officially higher than the front of the car. They lived at the bottom of a hill and have to park it at the top of the hill at a friend’s house and walk down because the road is just pure ice. This is a SUV 4 wheel drive car to boot!

Oy I had forgotten about winter carnival coming up.

It’s unexpected to hear about the occurrences that are happening in the South due to this weather! On the Elvis Duran Morning Show they were talking to a man who had been on the side of the road the entire night and was unable to get home…Just unexpected…surreal… :open_mouth:

@deb922 Were you in my backyard taking pictures?

There are apparently videos going around social media in the south claiming the snow is genetically engineered.

… seriously.

http://wtvr.com/2014/01/30/geo-engineered-snow-isnt-real/</a></p>

I’m going to classify this under “can’t make this up”

It was genetically modified. Sublimation was disproved in 2012.

I was so confused momof3sons! I saw your avatar and I thought it was mine! Too funny!

It’s 32 degrees out! Tomorrow, it’s supposed to get up to 33! Whooooooooo!
