Governor Closes all Minnesota Schools Next Monday! How Cold Will it Be in Your State?

I haven’t heard that our office is closed but I am planning to stay home at least part of the day. This sounds crazy but I just want to “feel” the cold in my house and make sure the furnace stays running, pipes don’t freeze, etc. If my kids are home sleeping they won’t know what is going on as they can sleep through anything.

Meanwhile, my daughter’s boss really wants her to work tomorrow in anticipation of a lot of stir-crazy kids needing to burn off energy (schools have been closed for two weeks; tomorrow as supposed to be the first day back). She works at a drop-in gym-type place. I am not sure how I feel about her even driving in the extreme cold, let alone walking to and from her car. What do others think?

Yep, I guess they are. U of M-Flint was on Channel 7’s school closing list. U of M-Dearborn wasn’t, though, so maybe they’re going back the same time as U of M-AA.

And that’s nice of them to do that. I know people generally have to make due with the weather, especially in a place like Michigan, but it’s always scary driving in the snow/ice. It’s nice to get a break sometimes.

I am just guessing, but maybe the snow is less a concern than the wind chill? Worry may be that people aren’t impeded by travelling on snow or ice, but stuck where they cannot get warm? I have heard in these temps frostbite can set in just as few as ten minutes for exposed skin.

In Wi there is no issue with snow (for once). Just the blasted cold.

To the college crowd…what a headache. My DD, when in college, would have been flying back today as their classes started the Monday after New Years always. Since she was in sunny CA, the weather there would have been fine. Flying today, however, would NOT be fine!

I hope all of the traveling college students don’t have too much trouble rescheduling flights.

I am more worried about the snow than the wind chill, but anywhere I have to go on Monday I will be right in the dead center of town. Emergency vehicles will get to me quickly and I will be dressed appropriately. I was really worried about the cold from that ice storm we had the week before Christmas, because we were driving from Grand Rapids to Detroit that night and a lot of it was farm country with nobody around for miles-- if we had gotten into a bad accident I am afraid nobody would have found us until morning. And the power was out, so it was pitch black. I am not worried about driving to work in the cold. I am just worried about the snow. Walking to and from my car isn’t going to hurt me unless I slip and knock myself out somehow, I am not worried about it.

It is. He works at a dog day care for one of his jobs (that’s the one that cancelled) and most of their customers cancelled for today (and I expect for tomorrow).

Unfortunately, the special needs children that he works with just had their school called off so he’ll almost certainly be called in there tomorrow at 6 AM. eek… just hope the roads aren’t terrible!

Two of my U of M friends are supposed to be coming in tonight from California via Chicago. I’m waiting to hear if their flights are cancelled… they’ll almost certainly be!

i live in MN! Haha! No school tomorow! Though i would rather have no snow and go to school because i HATE winter :(

Michigan State just cancelled classes for tomorrow.
The seniors there will have had two snow days (we had one my sophomore year)! ONE is unprecedented lol.

I am spoiled by my primary job as a pastor, which means that on bad weather days I can choose to work at home doing sermon or administrative stuff. Now that I am moonlighting as a home health aide I HAVE to get out in all kinds of weather, because our client’s life may depend upon my getting there.

Freezing rain here in PA today and I’m hoping the electricity stays on til the Packers game ends. For some reason our furnace died at church so it was 58 degrees for worship…fortunately I’m used to that since we keep our house at 60-62 all winter.

Wow, I’m surprised State closed! I’ve heard they’re pretty strict.

We had a snow day at OU last year and apparently it was the first time in 17 years that the University closed. Now it’s going for 2 years in a row.

Our universities have either gotten softer or our winters have gotten harsher.

Well, it’s official - my first day as a student teacher is a snow day!

Our county here in NW Ohio will be under a Level 3 Snow Emergency starting at 5:30pm and going until at least noon tomorrow- you can actually be ticketed for being out on the road. I work at a university/med school and being non-essential, have been called off for tomorrow. Nice to know ahead of time. Not so nice to see the snow really starting to pile up now.

harvest, I wonder if more people are commuting than before? That could encourage universities to shut down for safety at lower snow/danger conditions.

Finally looked outside- the snow is above the bottom of my car (I drive a Kia Rio)… not sure how high that is, but it’s nothing I want to drive in -.-

I just heard from my FMIL in Grand Rapids that she has at least a couple of feet of snow, she says it’s the worst storm they’ve had in years. I look to have about 5 or 6 inches I think so far. Talking to her makes me feel like a whiner lol. I am keeping an eye on my fiance as he shovels as I hide in the den with my space heater. I really wanted him to get as much as he can shoveled today so he has less tomorrow.

At this rate even with the super cold temps it might be safer for me to walk the three or four miles to work than to try to drive my poor little car.

My kid’s easy peasy flight back from FL just got cancelled. They told her next flight they could get her on was Wed. After having 3 browsers on, hitting refresh every few seconds, I was able to her back tomorrow morning from a different airport. The flight is 6:30am and the car service is over $200. This flight is not even on any flight tracker. I think they just added this one last minute. She is going to be picked up at 3:30am tomorrow. I really hope the flight is not going to be cancelled. Thankfully there is a CC parent down in FL who said D2 could stay with her if the flight should get cancelled.

Thankfully I just convinced S2 to work from home tomorrow. Madison’s high is expected to be -11 or so. Toasty!! I couldn’t imagine him standing on the street corner waiting for the bus.

We’re currently at 562 districts/schools closing. You’d think at some point they’d just start listing the open ones! :p

Northern suburbs (Chicago), high of -13 and a wind-chill around -45 or -50

Schools closed tomorrow–extreme cold/ icy roads.
