Govt shutdown and flying

My S flies out Sunday night. Hope all goes well, but he’s pretty chill & flexible so not too concerned. He also doesn’t HAVE to be in any particular place at a special time, so he just files claims with credit card companies when he’s inconvenienced (lost luggage, delayed flights). He enjoys travel and doesn’t get too concerned when plans go awry.

Our son, the leech, is not getting paid. What a loser, eh?

ETA: He says the military is guaranteed only one check of back pay after operations resume because, for example, our 1M-person Army has an average paycheck of $2,500, so one round of back pay = $2.5 billion.

I fear someone rightfully worried and concerned may not be on top of their hand and something bad happens.

Disgusting! It makes me very angry. Since when were federal workers portrayed as the devil? And why?

You’ll notice that Congress is still getting paid….

Yes. And at any corporate entity where I have ever worked, we would be working nights and weekends to address an issue of this magnitude. For our regular wage.

Fwiw, I had to fly during the first week of the shutdown, and I went out of the way to thank everyone at TSA for being there and protecting the public. It’s a little thing, but I feel like it’s important to acknowledge their work, especially because security isn’t most people’s favorite part of the flying experience.

Yes, and the President and SCOTUS, all due to the Constitution which essentially says that they will get paid and cannot have their salaries cut for any reason (other than impeachment, resignation or death).

btw: As he did in his first term, Trump is donating his salary this term.

[hopefully this is considered factual, and not political. But if anyone flags it, I will be happy to delete.]

Is Adelita Grijalva getting paid yet?

Probably not.

I read that the military will be paid during the shutdown. :crossed_fingers:

at least next week. Not sure that they can find enough quarters in the couch cushions to make another payroll.

National news reports indicate that about 8 billion dollars will be taken from military research & development (R&D) funds to pay military salaries. (According to a quick internet search: Total monthly payroll for the US Military is in excess of $5 billion excluding some benefits’ payments.)

I will choose to believe and rely on info from the families of those living in the military who can and will give accurate “real time” information on if they are getting paid or not as opposed to hearsay or even articles that are getting fed info from our government.

If @ChoatieMom says no paycheck coming in or limited back pay expected, that’s what I’ll believe right now.

Yes, military is likely getting paid out of the Pentagon budget. But what about the Federal Marshall’s who keep judges, juries and witnesses safe at our courthouses, what about ATF agents who get sent to disarm a bomb or grenade, what about the FBI? These are our fellow citizens who continue to show up for work with no paycheck. Will these people get back pay eventually? Previous shutdowns indicate yes. But for all these “essential workers” how do you put gas in the car and keep the lights on with no certainty about when you’ll get a paycheck?

That was what our son told us last week. He is already a paycheck behind but has adequate savings to withstand a shutdown. As of last week, he was told there would be reimbursement for only one paycheck, but I guess that could change. Semper Gumby.

If true, this is not good news as that is the very pool of funds earmarked to pay for our son’s (waffling) decision to stay in the Army. He is seriously considering starting to outprocess next March.

But back to flying, right?

(Meant to reply to @abasket, not @blossom’s previous post.)

I honestly think it’s incredible that our men and women in the armed forces (and all the other essential federal employees) can manage to be the professionals that they are despite the demonizing, demeaning and now financially reckless way that they are being treated.

I think the loud and raucous voices screaming about the “leeches” on the federal budget should spend a few days in a deep hole somewhere in the Nevada desert monitoring our nuclear capabilities and then follow that up with a shift confiscating box cutters and home-made weapons at a federal courthouse. And then accompany a team from the FBI and ATF successfully disarming (arrests but no casualties) a home in a residential neighborhood wired with explosives and AK-47’s stacked up in the kitchen.

This is not the politics forum and the topic of the thread is flying during lockdown.

If someone wants to start a thread about paychecks — military or otherwise - feel free. For this thread, please return to topic.

My DH is to land within the hour across the country. The airport here was VERY crowded when I dropped him off VERY early this morning. He said the TSA was not a problem this morning, and I am not sure how “real time” flight aware is, but it showed about 25 or so minutes from being listed as “taxiing to the runway” to taking off. DK if this is “normal”, how many planes were ahead of his or if they were spacing out flights (arrivals and departures).

We flew a month ago, nonstop across the country, and we waited on the runway about 35 minutes both ways, in a long line of planes. I think it’s normal.

It depends on the airport. At PAE, that would be outrageous. At SEA or SFO, that happens all the time.
