Govt shutdown and flying

My D and GD were on a flight from Indianapolis to Boston on Thursday–only problem was landing in Boston. D texted that the plan was 6th in line and waiting for an open runway.

I am not flying, but will be taking a cruise next month. I am hoping this is over before then.

My son’s flight, Phoenix to Cleveland, is currently delayed 3 hours. “Waiting for a pilot” is the excuse.

There’s always been delays like this. I’m curious to see stats vs prior periods to know if the delays are worse than normal. I’m not sure they are but now we see the headlines.

entirely possible as there are weather delays in the northeast. So, if the crew is deadheading from there…

You are right, of course. We will have to see what happens when the pilot finally shows up.

The pilot showed up and they were able to take off almost immediately. Very impressive.

Both to and from were probably the least eventful flights we’ve had in years. From TSA Precheck to takeoff, everything was smooth, no lines, and we were on time. The new PreCheck line at DIA in the East Terminal worked very well. We also like the redone walkway if you’re going to Terminal A. Much easier than going down to the trains.

The same thing happened to my husband coming back from MN a few weeks ago, so we were expecting it today coming back from CO, but we actually left early. From what we heard, they are only doing the work on weekends. Perhaps they weren’t working on the runway today because of the weather or the holiday weekend.

I’m back from my trip, and my son and husband are off on theirs, and flying was pretty smooth, as DIA goes. However, perhaps because it was the first weekend of a lot of districts’ fall breaks (and a long weekend), it was a madhouse. We fly out of C concourse. I’m glad I didn’t walk down to the A concourse to catch the train as many did from East security. The terminal boarding area for the train was pretty empty, but the train boarding area at A was absolutely mobbed. I’ve never seen it like that. Of course that’s a travel volume issue, not a TSA issue

Good to know. When I saw you could do the walkway and then get on the train to the other terminals from there, I was thinking that if we ever left from another terminal, that might be a faster way to do it. Now I know better.

I fly a lot. I’ve not typically experienced that. last flight was for me a few weeks ago.

S arrived Monday and leaves tonight. So far he hasn’t experienced many issues to speak of.

H flew from San Diego to Houston this morning with no issues. He returns to San Diego late Wednesday so fingers crossed that flight goes smoothly too.

Flew through Houston twice over the weekend and did experience delays but none severe enough to cause me to miss connections I did have to hurry to make my second flights. No Kristi Noem on airport TVs at least.

At Albany TSA was friendly. I got random pulled out and they swabbed my shoes. Made me feel good that they are doing their job.

Kristy Noem was on a constant reel. Must have gone 5 times in 3 mins. Volume quiet. Only words I heard democrats in congress. No one was paying attention.

Surprised any airport would play this.

My kids flew across the country mid week last week and back this week. They left from the same building 1-2 hours apart, arrived 1-2 hours apart on the same airline - and had completely different flights with layovers in different cities. Why? Who knows… Boys…

All of the flights went off without a hitch last week. On the way back, S1’s first flight was delayed several hours and he missed his connection in SFO. But he was able to get a different flight to REA - 10 min from his apartment vs 30 min for the original Dulles. The airline even managed to get his luggage on the new flight. S2’s flights went OK, except he was trying to get an earlier 2nd flight since he had a 4 hours layover. His luggage made it on the plane, but he didn’t! He was stuck on the later one.

FDIL2’s family flew from DC to BOS yesterday. They were delayed by an hour due to the weather in Boston.

Nobody said anything about slow TSA lines or anything of that nature.

Happy to report that we returned from Spain today with no issues. (Though the Spaniards rightfully confiscated my Swiss Army knife that I’d forgotten to remove from my hiking backpack.) Supposedly Spanish baggage handlers were striking, but all the luggage made it through smoothly as well.
