Govt shutdown and flying

My flights were also on time and uneventful. TSA was quick too.

Returned from the Big Island a few days ago. The TSA lines at SeaTac were long but moved fast. A couple of TSA dudes manning the line I was in were loudly speaking Arabic to each other and paid only superficial attention to the screens of their Rapiscan. No one was frisked… so I suspect the level of sensitivity of the human microwaves were set pretty low. Similar experience in Kona, except the lines were short. Not a single bag was pulled for secondary screening… no one was frisked.

I was frisked at O’Hare going out and had to go through the 360 machine at BWI coming home because my sweater’s zipper set off the metal detector.

D left today, hnl to lax. She seemed to have gotten through from ticket counter to gate pretty quickly and didn’t complain about anything so I think all went smoothly.

She got from hnl to lax in a timely manner.

Perhaps donating it toward the $2B retrofit of his gifted 747 would be a good choice.

Flew from Denver to Boston yesterday. TSA Pre was rather slow scanning carry on’s but otherwise the flight was uneventful (other than some rockin’ turbulence just after take off).

We flew into Dulles/Washington DC on Tuesday night from Europe, and the line to get through customs moved pretty quickly. We were on the largest passenger plane that exists (I can’t remember what it’s called, but it’s a double decker) and we figured with all those people the line would take forever.

Oh, the Airbus A380! We’ll be flying back from Australia on one of those next year. Apparently there are aviation fanatics who go out of their way to book on one just for the experience.

I was online selecting our Premium Economy seats and the only other kind I saw was Business. I thought, where’s Coach? Then…ooooh, there’s a whole nuther floor on this plane - cool!

DS had no issues flying from or going to Phoenix. He got to the airport 2 hours before his flight and was at the gate for about 1 1/2 hours. He says…very fast through TSA and it was morning commuter time.

And bigger plus. His flight back to Phoenix was supposed to have a stop (no plane change) but somewhere along the way, it was changed to a non-stop!

So…win, win, win.

Our trip down to Austin on Southwest was about the quickest, smoothest one we’ve ever had. Even with a layover in Baltimore, our total travel time was not even 5 1/2 hours. Pre-check in Portland was a breeze. We got in 40 minutes early, at 10:10 am! It was nice having almost the whole day there.

Coming back was a different story, but the reason was that 400,000 people descended on Austin this past weekend for the Formula One races, and it seemed like ALL of them were trying to fly out the same time we were. We got a text from Southwest that we should get to the airport three hours before our flight. It took about 30 minutes to get our bags checked in at Southwest’s curbside counter (the line grew and grew even as we waited), and another 30 minutes to get through security (even though I had pre-check, I went through the regular line so my son didn’t have to go alone).

The Austin airport was about the most crowded I’ve ever seen anywhere. Since my son and I went through a different security line than DH, we got separated from him and it took another 30 minutes to find him. He had left his phone off. It was so crowded we couldn’t even find a place to stand - we were blocking the trash can. DS walked back and forth at the gate, trying to find his dad. FINALLY, DH walked up and didn’t understand why I was so angry with him (really, after the international losing-the-passport debacle??). Ugh.

After that, everything went fairly smoothly. The plane from Baltimore to Portland was very empty, so I could stretch out and sleep. The flight was delayed about 40 minutes, though, because a light had gone out! Maintenance had to come fix it, and then paperwork needed to be filled out.

Our neighbor had given us a ride to the airport last week, but he wasn’t available to pick us up. I was a little nervous about getting a ride to our little town, but Uber came and it was only $50 plus tip, to my surprise. The driver was very nice.

The Capital 10k will be going on the weekend I’m there for my friend’s wedding, ha, so I guess we will go through a similar experience traveling home.

Flight to Salt Lake City yesterday ran about 40 minutes late due to some weather-related issues and the need to take on extra fuel before take off. Going thru security was fast–though it was at 5 am and hardly anyone was in the airport.

My big grumble–no potable water on the flight, meaning no hot beverages available and no water in the lavs. (But that’s an airline maintenance issue and not a TSA issue.)

I am flying to Asia today out of JFK. The airport is very quiet. I am sitting in a lounge and it is empty. I spoke with my uber driver. He said arrivals to JFK have been very quiet. I arrived early because I expected the security would be very crowded.
I am wondering if people are cancelling their trips and many immigrants are not traveling.

TY for sharing that. We fly to DC tomorrow and I just added hand sanitizer.

(I usually carry it daily anyhow, but I now have a star by it on my packing list.)

Flew out of Logan at 9:30 this morning on American. No issues at all. No wait in the pre-check lines, and the flight was on time and landed in Phoenix a bit early.

I read today that people are about to miss their first paycheck.

So no one has been hurt yet.

Will things get worse? I’m flying Wed - Friday. Ugh

I read somewhere today they brought back a bunch of HHS to process Medicare apps/changes etc. The concern is agitating their aged electorate. Perhaps they will realize how important TSA and ACT are to their corporate flying supporters.
