Govt shutdown and flying

TSA not paid. Already missed a check. Still working. THANK YOU.

Both flights this week on time. Taking off as we speak CHS to BNA.

DCA had delays due to shutdown related issues, affecting US senators among others.

Orlando was pretty much shut down yesterday. This doesn’t help with them trying to get people back from Jamaica.

EWR has had a rough couple of days, between a staffing shortage-induced ground stop Wednesday evening and then several weather-related ground stops yesterday, that I believe were also exacerbated by staffing issues. It took me 16 hours to get home from JAX yesterday, between circling and being diverted to IAD, waiting 6 hours there to get to reboard, only to sit on the tarmac for 3 more hours, only to take-off and circle again for a while until we could be cleared to get in line to land at EWR.

I admit to having worried about this prior to our trip earlier this month (Denver to/from London). Was relieved for it to be a non-issue. But feeling for the impacted employees.

My kid is in Chicago right now waiting for a plane which is supposed to depart at 8:00 CST. But the good news is that she cleared customs and security with no issues. :crossed_fingers:t2:she gets home before midnight as scheduled. This same flight was on time M, T, W and was an hour late TH and F.

But she is flying to our local airport (flight and day change from original itinerary) and that’s only 25 minutes from her house.

My husband really lucked out coming home this past Friday because not only his flight departed on time, the airport had a gate for them when the plane arrived 20 minutes early! He is supposed to fly again next week. Not counting on similar luck!

Yay! My kid’s flight actually left Chicago early, and arrived at its destination early!

Early means she was at the baggage claim about 11 pm. At our airport, that is where the issues are because they work with a skeleton staff there late nights.

I’ll find out more today! I’m sure she is sleeping after her VERY long travel day yesterday.

You guys were lucky. I just had a “fun” night in the ATL airport. Original flight was around 6pm yesterday and after multiple delays was cancelled at 2am. Just boarded my rebooked flight so that’s more progress than yesterday. :crossed_fingers:

SIL returned from a work conference yesterday. He had originally planned to fly out of New Orleans on the last late night flight out to our area, but D1 persuaded him that was a bad idea. (It was; the flight was canceled.) Instead he flew out on the first flight on Saturday morning . He arrived on time, but while time he was enroute, at 9:30am, DCA issued a 40 minute ground hold on all incoming flights. (Meaning all flights with DCA as a destination were being held at the originating airport.)

Flying in/out of DCA is always a mess, but the cut backs have made it even worse than usual.

Today’s scorecard: 69 delays, 52 canceled flights

I am so thankful I was able to fly out to meet my newest grand baby 2 weeks ago. I had an uneventful trip out and return, but with the flight reductions at airports at both ends of the trip I’m not sure that would still be the case.

Anyone know if their credit cards that offer trip delays, will cover this situation?

I am currently sitting in the Delta Lounge at LaGuardia. Just spent a great three days in NYC with a close friend. My flight home has been delayed but when we arrived at the airport we found my friend’s flight was cancelled and she can only get a flight out early tomorrow morning. So she is now in a nearby hotel.
We are fortunate that we are both seasoned travelers. And this is not the worst situation for us. I feel for others who have situations that are very difficult and this is causing problems.

My husband has had a long gig helping his brother with medical treatments in Boston (originally bought a one-way ticket). I am HOPING that his trip back Wed night is uneventful.

I doubt it because it is not the airline’s fault. Things like weather and emergencies usually are not covered unless the airline caused it.

Look at the terms. Highly doubt it.

I’ve not seen trip delay coverage (maybe I have but missed it) through a credit card but these delays are outside the airline control and any kind of compensation usually requires that.

We had no problems flying home from Tucson to Chicago but my brother in law’s flight to Grand Rapids via Atlanta was delayed six times and he eventually cancelled and booked on another airlines. He made it home a day late.

It includes no guarantee from Republicans to extend the health care subsidies that have been at the heart of the funding fight, but Democrats involved in the talks believe that House and Senate GOP leaders will negotiate on a compromise in the coming weeks.

That seems unlikely, but it will be revealing.
