GPA Calculation for Turkish Student

Good day pleasant people of CC. I have a pretty big issue with my GPA. The thing is, I don’t have an American GPA. I’ve done a Google search as well as a CC search and I couldn’t find any relevant data, at least none that’ll help me.

Percentage to Grade Point in the Turkish Education for grades 1-12 is as follows;

Point(%) Grade
85-100 ->5
70-84 –>4
55-69 –>3
45-54 –>2
25-44 –>1
0-24 —>0

On our yearly report cards we get two numbers to reflect our success. These are;
(I’m translating from the top of my head but you’ll get the gist of it.)

End of the Year Success Point.
End of the Year Success Grade.

The mathematical formulas for determining these numbers is as follows;
(Caution, it’s about to get real, yo.)

n= total number of courses, t= number of credits of said course
**EOTY Success Point :/b

(tnpn + tn-1pn-1 + … + t1*p1) / (tn + tn-1 + … + t1)
Basically we are taking a weighted average. (Not “AP/IB courses get a +1” weight, mathematical weight)

**EOTY Success Grade :/b

(tngn + tn-1gn-1 + … + t1*g1) / (tn + tn-1 + … + t1)
Once again, weighted average.

My Stats

Freshman : EOTY Point:93.44, EOTY Grade:5.00
Sophomore : EOTY Point:89.60, EOTY Grade: 4.90
Junior : EOTY Point:88.90, EOTY Grade:4.86

The unweighted averages would be Point: 90.64%, Grade: 4.92/5

I know that my GPA isn’t (4.92/5)4 OR (90.64/100)4.

So, how do I find out my GPA in the US Scales?
Should I pay an agency to do it? If so, any recommendations?

Thank you all for taking time out of your busy schedules to read this through, I know I’ve certainly not made it easy. :)

Have a nice day.

Unless you specifically need an American GPA, you should report your Turkish grades as given and not attempt to convert anything. Colleges that frequently receive applications from foreign students will know how to read your transcript; colleges that don’t will explicitly ask you for a grade conversion from an accredited agency.

If you have an official Turkish GPA, you can report that GPA on your college applications. There will also be space to explain what scale that GPA is on.

Unlike in many European and Asian countries, there is no standardized grading system in the US. Every single US high school can decide for themselves how they want to grade their students (I have seen 4.0, 4.3, 5.0 and percentage scales, with various weightings for honors courses) and so American colleges are quite used to working with different scales.

One of the colleges I’m applying for has a GPA requirement so I guess I’ll have to get to an accredited agency. Any agency in particular you would recommend? I think ECE and WES do it…

What do you mean by a GPA requirement? Is the college explicitly asking for an evaluation from international applicants? (If so, they probably also tell you which agency they prefer.)

If you are in doubt, it’s easier to email the admissions office than to get an evaluation.

I e-mailed the admissions office now. Waiting on a reply. They got a GPA requirement for a scholarship they offer.

The thing is, I want to find out my GPA equivalent. What if it’s a lot more than 3.62 (my point/25)? What if my three year point average of 90.6 is a 4.00 US GPA (since afaik 85% and up is an A/A+ and that’s a 4 GPA)?

I used an online calculating tool which had my country in it’s list of supported countries and it turned out a GPA of about 3.96.

During my 3 years of high school I took a sum total of 114 credit hours.

Freshman: 39 5’s (85-100)
Sophomore: 37 5’s (85-100) 2 4’s (70-84)
Junior: 35 5’s (85-100) 2 4’s (70-84)

I think the site I found matched 5 -> A and 4 -> B and took out an average based on that.

I just hope that my GPA is a LOT better than what I first thought it was (3.62).
