Does anyone know when graduating students are told what distinction they have earned? My D is in a distinguished majors program where her final thesis will be reviewed in April to determine her honors status. Do they usually find out at graduation, around the same time that grades are posted or weeks earlier? I would like to put it on her graduation announcements to family members but I’m not sure if that’s even possible.

Our experience was we didn’t know until very close to graduation day.

Well, if she is DMP with at least a 3.4 GPA she’ll get SOME form of distinction so you can still say with “with distinction” and have the rest be a surprise.

My advice is just stick to the announcement. You can have additional information to share with interested parties, if true, when the time comes. For 2013, our son did not know formally what he got until close to the end.

Our D is in a DMP as well and will be graduating this spring. Her advisor gave her cut-offs for consideration of each level (distinction, high distinction, higher at distinction). Although it’s not necessarily a given (students can score poorly on their thesis which would affect their level of distinction), it is a gauge. I would encourage her to ask her DMP advisor.
