Graduation tomorrow, job offer today!

In this economy we are just amazed and thrilled for S1 who landed a job IN HIS FIELD! It IS possible! Share stories of gainful employment for your 2011 grads!

Congratulations. Just saw a blip on tv that companies plan to hire 19.3% new graduates this year than last. Avg. starting salary $50 k.

Congratulations. That is a wonderful beginning and ending. Story book type.

I’m not believing that beginning average starting salary… 50K? Not likely! But good news for sure, that hiring is picking up. DS has an engineering job, already begun, and will start fulltime at the end of the month…

Congrats to those who have jobs!! Terrific news.

S graduates this Saturday, Computer Science major. He interned for a Fortune 100 company for the last two summers and immediately upon the start of his senior year, they offered him a job to start after graduation. It made for a less stressful senior year, not having to interview. We are pretty proud of him!

That’s the best graduation present. Congratulations on getting your kid off your payroll.

Mine is starting at $56k, and turned down one that paid that, and for half her masters degree, and all benefits while still in school. (She was offered hers last November, as well as the one she turned down.)

Congrats!
Our son was one of the fortunate ones last year who had an engineering job in hand at graduation. How nice that is!

(His current dissatisfaction w/ “great” job is for another thread!)

Congrats! Lots of D1’s graduating friends aren’t so fortunate…what a nice “gift” for graduation! I’m glad that D will be a “funded” Ph.D. student in the fall!

Congrats to all!

Congrats! I love threads like this.

Any success stories for English, psychology, history majors? Great news for copmputer sciience, finance, and engineering folks. Great choices for majors=great job offers.

I know of a psychology grad who got a job at a center that works with autistic children. And an English grad who will be copy editing web sites for a major hotel conglomerate. In both cases, however, these jobs were the results of previous internships.

Job experience and internships: especially crucial for humanities graduates!

Just heard on the radio that starting salary for a Petroleum Engineer out of college is $120-150k. Not bad!

I have been trying to find a qualified CompSci or Engr major with 3-5 years of experience in Geology/Geoscience and it’s been SO hard. The candidates are so picky and not wanting any maintenance jobs - only fresh new design projects (don’t we ALL want those :-). We finally made an offer to one. I can hire one more next quarter. Not looking forward to the interview process starting up again.

Congrats, OP!

I aspire to have news on this thread soon. I love my grad no matter what.

Ditto cottonwood!

Son started applying in January. Graduated from grad school 3 weeks ago and got two offers this week. His wife who graduated as well has offer. Now they have to figure it all out. They have both been so resourceful, have been working part time through their entire six years of undergrad and grad programs as well as working paid and unpaid internships. The job hunt process has been an eye opener for them. I am thrilled for them and the next stage of their lives together!

We were thrilled when S was offered full-time jobs in his field, Feb of his SR year. For him tho, he had to wait a year for his security clearance & his paid orientation will start in June, about 13 months AFTER his graduation. It has been a great year for him & all of us. We had a nice time getting reacquainted with him as a more responsible adult (he lived at home & helped declutter & make repairs around our house & his grandparent’s storage room which has become the storage room for my non-profit). He has also had the time & money to travel overseas & explore a bit. He & D will be driving his car across the country & then D will be coming home for the summer. We were & are very happy for S & for us! Admittedly, his job will NOT be $120K-$150K quoted above for starting petroleum engineer, but it still seems like a very good salary & benefits and is his major, EE.
