I listened to Adele and Fastlove again. What artistry. She turned a pop song into something hauntingly beautiful. A beautiful, moving tribute to George Michael.
^Would have been if she had not botched it and then said something that made the kiddos in the audience cover their ears.
Then she restarted and proceeded to botch it again. She has a great voice but apparently is not that good at performing live.
I did not see Beyonce’s performance as anything remotely resembling porn. She was wearing a bikini in the filmed sequence not as a sexual statement but as highlighting motherhood by showing her pregnant belly.
I’m completely baffled as to how that is being described as sleazy.
Part of the reason Beyonce’s mom introduced her (as I understand it) is because the performance was an ode to motherhood of sorts. So…her mom.
There was plenty of “nakedness” going on in that auditorium - I can’t say I love it but Beyonce was just one of many. Being pregnant didn’t make it “worse” for me.
“She has a great voice but apparently is not that good at performing live.” Here’s another take on Adele’s performance. I thought the arrangement of Fastlove was beautiful. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/why-fastlove-was-a-great-choice-adeles-george-michael-tribute-at-grammys-975298
That was a great choice, but she could not hit the notes on more than one occasion.
Well, we’ve had this argument before on here, I think it was even about Beyoncé, so nobody is going to change anyone’s mind. I think it might have been last year’s Grammys, with the up close crotch shots with her singing about having sex, and of course, years of background with these sort of performances from her. This is what she does, this is what she promotes, selling her sexuality in an overt way. I understand that some consider this beautiful, tasteful artistry (especially guys, no doubt, they love to watch such "artistry), but since I am not a promoter of objectifying women, it appears very close to porn to me. I do not think it is classy and tasteful. We all have our opinions, and I’m not going to talk anyone into changing theirs.
However, if we had gorgeous male singers wearing nothing but tight G-strings, outlining their bulges and gyrating while they sang, perhaps you might find me complimenting their tremendous “artistry”. And if the practically naked guy’s mom was the one to introduce him, perhaps I’d say, “Ah, so sweet of mom to do that for her dear son”. Hmm…
Always interesting to see different people’s takes on the same performance. In terms of Adele starting the song over, Billboard weighed in on her performance as well- “The spine tingling, balladic arrangement of Michael’s dance-pop hit-this time in the right key-was easily worth the wait, and she received a roaring standing ovation for her second take.”
I think that’s a false equivalency. Maybe if they had homed into a close up shot of a camel toe it would be the same thing. Also, I don’t remember seeing her gyrating in a sexualized way last night.
The other performance you mentioned I didn’t see, but I remember reading about it here and a lot of people agreed with your assessment of it above and found it in poor taste. Her ode to motherhood/pregnancy last night had nothing to do with sex imo.
Adele certainly has a loving, forgiving fan base. I’m very surprised that the headline wasn’t “Adele messes up at Grammy’s 2 years in a row.” But really what I take issue with is that she - whether intentionally or not - made the George Michael tribute about her, not him.
Yup, missypie. I was surprised, too. This is what happened at the last year’s Grammy awards:
Well, you gotta look at past performance, Nrdsb4. All of her performances are about sex, just because she’s pregnant, if her boobs and buttocks are spilling out of her outfit, why should one consider it any different than the others? And I don’t see any false equivalency about guys doing the same thing as women, if it’s wonderfully artistic, why shouldn’t they do it too? They might get more female fans.
However, no reason to keep arguing about just one topic on this thread. I would like to see the rest of the show, and from reading what you guys are saying, it sounds well worth watching.
I had to go to the tape to see what the heck @busdriver11 was talking about. Apparently – because I was also reading the paper at the time – i missed the first 20 seconds or so of Beyonce’s performance, and so missed out on her largely-unclothed-but-still-modest reveal. All I remembered was her over-the-top stately Earth Goddess schtick that was very fully clothed, and quite beautiful.
It’s impossible to deny that Beyonce has spent a lot of time selling sex, but last night’s performance didn’t add to it.
The false equivalency was you equating males wearing clothes which clearly outline their genitals with what Beyonce wore, which most certainly did not.
And I do not agree that her performance had anything to do with sex, regardless of what “all” of her other performances are about. The whole point of her initial outfit was to showcase her pregnancy, not to simulate porn.
Well, so people can disagree. I watched just a few minutes of her performance, and when the massive boobs and butt started pouring out, we groaned and changed the channel. Just because you add a hugly pregnant belly to the mix doesn’t make it beautiful for me. I suppose for people who watch that kind of thing, they are desensitized to it and it doesn’t bother them. Guess I’m just an old fogey. Kids these days!
I enjoyed Ed Sheeran’s performance. His music style reminds me of Andy Grammar.
^^^Did I not mention Ed Sheeran’s performance - LOVED. IT. That song is on my current running list and I tend to hit replay!
Finally watched the Ed Sheeran video on youtube with over 100 million views.
I think it is one of the most played songs on the radio when I’m in the car.
There are no background dancers or theatrics just a talented singer that mesmerized the audience with his voice. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uPvARJW_iVI
Adele " messes up" initially with Fastlove but she corrected it. I like her but am in no way a superfan, don’t even own any of her music. But I do appreciate her and the time and effort she put into trying to do right by George Michael. I don’t see how anything she did took away from honoring George Michael. I just see no evidence that she tried to make it "about her, not him. " The song, the pictures of him shown behind her , were meant to honor him. I get that her performance was not appealing to some people posting. That is always a matter of personal taste. I really do believe though that her heart was in the right place with this. Many of her fellow artists were quite moved- in the audience, in the orchestra, and listening at home. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/music/artists/adele-george-michael-grammys-performance-triumphed-despite-going/
No, not with the performance as it was designed, with the fact that an acclaimed performer sang off key.
(Contrast that with Lady Gaga’s Superbowl performance…)
