Love them… but can’t say I would’ve put them in ‘rock’ or even ‘alternative’ – at least as those were defined in the past.
If that was her intent, she failed. Her Barbie-inspired performance outfit accentuated her beauty in a very noticeable way. So I gather you didn’t think too much of that outfit. ![]()
In my original post, I was referring to her outfit in which she accepted her Grammy—hideous.
I wasn’t referring to any post here. The wave of vitriol and hate that has been directed toward her prior to the show (driven by her relationship, attention at NFL games, politics, etc) only got worse after last night. That is what I was referring to.
I noticed the background noise as well during some presentations. I was surprised how much talking there was! I don’t recall that on other shows.
My friend is close personal friends with Luke Combs (since college). He said some people wanted Luke to make Fast Car more his “own”, but Luke insisted on honoring Tracy Chapman by keeping it as close to her version as possible. From everything he shares, Luke is a class act.
Deleted.
I don’t think Jay Z is whining or a clown. I also, however, don’t believe that he was artful in his critique. Ds2 and I talked about this (and related issues) for more than an hour this morning. Jay Z cares about the Grammys and wants them to do better.
Ds2 also knows Luke Combs and his wife and thinks the world of them. Truly a good guy.
Billie Eilish was dressed as Poodle Parade Barbie.
In talking about Joni Mitchell this morning with ds, I cried. I cried last night at both Tracy Chapman’s and Joni’s performances. Funny to be so moved the next day, but I loved seeing a black, middle-aged queer woman and an 80yo woman who is battling back from severe health issues claim their space. We can pay homage to our older artists outside the In Memorium segments.
I thought the In Memoriam segment was too choppy. I kept thinking it was over and then they did some more.
I liked Billy Joel’s new song but his voice has changed a lot since I saw him in concert seven years ago. Normal as a part of aging, I guess. ![]()
Maybe awards shows should be more like private school - a uniform of sort required so that people can focus on the person and their performance and self - not the clothes they are wearing, their skin decor, their hair, their personal style… ![]()
I don’t have a problem commenting on the clothing or looks of the performers. Dressing the stars is a big business. But i’m a woman. When men comment on how women need to pretty themselves up? Well, as the kids say … cringe.
100% some discussion of clothing/style is expected and appropriate! But yeah, we aren’t seeing a lot of comments about men in suits and how appropriate, flattering, etc. they are!
That’s hilarious. Thanks for sharing. I wouldn’t have known.
Who was the woman with the tattoos on her face that Trevor Noah said was so talented? The one with a toothpick in her mouth.
When Fast Car started, before we had faces I saw her hands and gasped “OMG that’s Tracey Chapman?” and I cried when she smiled at the audience. She’s amazing. What a voice. What a songwriter. And Combs was so delighted and letting her have her flowers…
Agree that dropping the album was tacky, but okay, whatever. Not as tacky as some other things that happened. We like JayZ and love Bey – but why is Blue on stage looking miserable? Why is he complaining? I mean , he’s not wrong, but otoh, we all know that Beyonce is a superstar Grammy winner? Award or not, she is secure.
Happy for Billie Eilish. I think her song is going to be a standard for decades.
I really loved Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell.
I liked that the awards were somewhat spread out between Taylor, Miley and Billie Eilish.
I feel like no matter what Taylor does people will love it or hate it. I was so happy to see Celine (looking better than I expected) that I really wanted Taylor to hug her, so I was happy to see a picture of them hugging backstage.
I wish you could’ve heard my convo this morning with ds2 about the whole Jay-Z thing. He got me to give Jay-Z more grace. I still think it’s a bad look, but I feel like I understand it more. I told ds that I wish Jay-Z had said what ds told me!
Hey, music lovers! If you haven’t seen The Greatest Night in Pop on Nextflix about the making of We Are the World, please watch it. Talk about a stroll down Memory Lane. Really fun and easy watch.
I assumed there was no hug at DIon’s request. If you have this rare illness, maybe a public hug (because there was a private one) upsets the equilibrium or something.
I am aware of his well-articulated criticism of the Grammys; and I agree with 90% of his criticism. (My oldest is a huge JayZ fan – once had his book autographed from the stage at a concert). I’m even okay with making people uncomfortable to make a point.
But – his wife is plenty able to articulate any disappointment on her own. To use a football metaphor, Dan Marino never won a SuperBowl, and nobdy doubts that his is a legendary talent. Same with Bey. She is irreplaceable whether she has Album of the Year or not. Men should stop 'rescuing" her from “failure”.
Another great take on Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs performance: Tracy Chapman and Luke Combs Gave America a Rare Gift: Harmony - The New York Times
1000% agree with the sentiment that men don’t need to keep talking for Beyonce.
