Grammys 2024

Though Miley Cyrus looked beautiful and sang wonderfully, she came across as very conceited to me. Both me and my husband were groaning about how full of herself she was. And we really didn’t need to know that she was not wearing underwear.

It was very distracting hearing all the background noise while people were singing, presenting or accepting awards. It seemed incredibly rude, but maybe they usually turn off the background mikes during these shows.

I loved Miley’s performance and thought she looked amazing. D2 was over for dinner while we watched the show and her complaint about the Grammy’s is that Lana Del Rey has never won!

Only because I know you will love this, ds2 sold Lana Del Rey a Christmas tree last year!

Fortunately or unfortunately for Taylor, with all the kudos and attention comes a much tighter focus on every move she makes.

I love that Miley is cool, controversial and unafraid to be who she wants to be, very complimentary of those who have come before her (like Mariah) stylish and beautiful in her own way. Her speaking and singing voice is stellar and she leaves it all on the stage (mic drop!)

But the real magic of music is there there is SO much. So many varieties and artists and opportunities to hear and see them all. To pick our favorites, to have our “tried and true”, to learn of new artists and to even have those who just don’t vibe with us!

I’ve never been a huge Joni Mitchell fan, and only grew to like her because of Love Actually, but that song is such a classic. And I liked the introduction and the background that she turned songwriting so introspective.

@Youdon_tsay of course I love that! D2 to is going to be so excited when I tell her.

My two cents.

Miley seemed to be in a much better place than she had been in the past.

How many times did Miley change clothes? ETA: Just looked it up. She had five outfits. No wonder she forgot her underwear. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I love Trevor Noah, but he seemed like he was trying too hard at the beginning. Things calmed down as the show progressed.

Same with Taylor. I like her. However, to me, she came across as if she was trying to be the star of the show. Did she stand and sing with every performer?

Apparently it was no secret that she was going to announce her album last night. Regardless, I didn’t like the way she did it. I thought she should have been gracious and appreciative for the award first.

Why was Olivia Rodrigo sitting next to Lenny Kravitz? Both of her dresses looked great, but I really liked the red one she wore when she performed.

Loved seeing Tracy Chapman and Joni Mitchell. It was great to see Stevie Wonder and Annie Lennox as well. I didn’t care for Billy Joel’s performance.

Taylor was a bit hyped up. Pounding on her producer, Jack Antonoff, self promoting in her first speech, announcing that it was her 13th grammy, and ignoring Celine Dion when she took her second Grammy. She is better than that.

My daughter went to see Jacob Collier perform during his residency at MIT and said genius is the only word that fits him.

I have always described Taylor Swift as awkward, and she was awkward last night. But I can’t deny her talent.

Tracy Chapman (Tufts '87) and Luke Combs performance hit me in the feels. Best performance of the night in my book. She looked absolutely radiant up there! Was just going to say this. I love how respectful he has been towards her/about her, giving her so much credit for his own success with the song.

Definitely I don’t want to talk over members of the community. I was thinking the more encompassing term because I believe Phoebe identifies as bi.

Not to belabor the point, I know we are all doing our best — I think all the above terms are acceptable (I just asked my daughter who is a big Boygenius fan lol). I wasn’t trying to correct, and I do find language very interesting. Thanks for the interesting exchange of ideas and may we all seek to understand and to learn about lots of types of music!

Tracy Chapman looked fantastic, and still sounds great.

I didn’t realize Miley’s dress was made of safety pins until I read about it, but it looked good. Not a huge fan of her music, but her performance was top notch.

Billie, love your voice and music. But you’re a beautiful girl, and I wish you would style yourself accordingly. LOL

Jay Z, you’re a clown.

Taylor Swift is on top of the world, and belongs there. Jealous haters going to hate, though.

Billie Eilish styles herself the way she does for a reason. She wants to choose the time and place for her body and clothing to take center stage. She chose to let her voice be what people watched last night.

People here are commenting on what she did/didn’t do. No one is challenging her talent. And no one here is a “jealous hater”. Hyperbole is unhelpful.

Thinking about Joni Mitchell’s performance, I believe that I enjoyed it so much because it was an older woman telling her story at this particular time in her life. She had a stroke, and she lived through it. She’s been through a lot, and she’s examining her life. It felt very different than the younger Joni version. It really resonated with me. Plus, the choice of accompanists was absolutely perfect.

Agree she was a gem. Also saw a video of her perform at the 2023 Newport Folk festival, also with, IIRC, Brandi Carlile. It was equally moving.
Slight correction, though. She didn’t have a stroke, she had a brain aneurism back in 2015. Effect was the same though- a hemorrhage in the brain. So glad to see her recovery.

I get what she’s trying to do, but often it looks like she’s trying to hide the fact that she is a beautiful woman, and goes to great lengths to obscure her beauty. I liked the fact that when she started to go off the rails a bit during her acceptance speech (which was pretty sweet, actually), that her brother stepped in and thanked people. Guessing they’d likely planned for this pretty well.
