Great Wolf Lodge...?

Has anyone been to Great Wolf Lodge? We’re thinking about going this summer. I’ve heard that there are a lot of “add-ons” when you get inside. How much can I expect to shell out for a two night stay (2 adults/2 kids)?

Any recommendations - pros/ cons

thanks

I haven’t been there but a friend of mine just took her daughter for her birthday. She said it was well worth the cost.

It’s been awhile. Extras I remember are lots of coins for the arcade area, food (any food on the premises was expensive for the type of food!), gift shops, stuff like that.

Which one? If you’re going to the one in Sandusky, I highly recommend Kalahari over GWL. I’ve been to the GWL in Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. They’re nice and a lot of fun. I think Kalahari is a much better deal though. The food at GWL is outrageous. Bring your own food.

We aren’t really a theme park family, but it isn’t supposed to be too bad if you stick to the water park.

My sister has nothing but good things to say about the ones in Texas. They easily amuse themselves the entire time they’re there.

We have a 3 day 2 night voucher so we’ll be going to the GWL in Williamsburg Virginia.

We took the kids to the Williamsburg location a few times. It was nice to be able to go sightseeing then come back and play without worrying about them.

The food isn’t great there, but there are lots of places around. The restaurant was quite pricey and bad.

There is also this thing you can rent - a wand or something that kids can use to find clues around.

If you don’t mind me asking / suggesting …

GWL, as I understand, is all indoors. Geared toward visiting during colder months.

If you’re going to be in Williamsburg in the summer anyway, why not go to Water Country USA (and B/G) instead:

[Water Park, Slides, Wave Pools and More | Water Country USA](http://www.watercountryusa.com/wc/)

It’s much larger, cheaper and there’s a lot more to do.
Plus, you’ll be outside in the sunshine!

PS: I can, also, if you wish, answer any questions about W/C USA.

golffather, it appears this is why they have chosen GWL. :)

Cost depends on your ability to say no. I took my kids there a couple of times when they were younger, and spent almost nothing extra, and stayed with the waterpark is what we are doing for fun mentality. I have friends who let their kids do the games and spent over 100 bucks on not much. unrelated to post question, but useful info. Turn right out of parking lot and drive down a mile or so and there is a well know dive barbecue restaurant called Pierce’s pit. it’s really good and pretty inexpensive.

They were on Undercover Boss.

I will say that three days seems like a LONG time to be at GWL unless you are a kid!

As someone else mentioned, water country and bush gardens are close. They are both really nice parks. Virginia beach is less than an hour away, if you are looking to extend your trip.

We live in Virginia about an hour and a half away from GWL. Always pass by it taking Thing #1 to ODU. We are going in the summer because H and I are both federal govt workers and will be having Furlough Friday’s from July 12 through September 20th. So we will be loosing 20% of our pay for about 3 months. The other thing is that D is VERY white- takes after the Irish side of the family and burns very easily, so not having to worry about sunblock every 30 minutes will be a plus.

The stay will be free (technically)- we can afford gas and we will bring stuff to eat. But maybe try the BBQ place suggested- H really loves good Q. The “divier” the better.

I just have to keep H and the kids out of the arcade!

Hope you have a great time! I have a friend with younger kids who takes winter weekend vacations to the GWL in Kansas City. Haven’t been there, but they have gone repeatedly.

Also have a very Irish/pale D, and I burn very easily. When D was younger she had a sweatshirt that said “Authentic redhead - do not expose to direct sunlight.”

Enjoy your Furlough Friday weekend - nice, inexpensive way to make lemonade out of lemons!

When we went we found the food/snacks really pricey. We chose to leave the premises to go eat. We also packed snacks for the hotel room. There were options for games/arcades, we had our children bring money for this…we were spending enough. Two nights was plenty for us adults. The kids had a blast and it was a great experience, but it was exhausting because being in the water for long periods of time just wears you out!

I hope you have a great time. If you stay away from the meals and snacks, you don’t have to worry about shelling out anymore money to the lodge!

My sister in law and her family stayed at the one in Williamsburg a few years ago. We live fairly close so went up one day for a few hours. Seems like fun for families with kids that like water slides . The food seemed very boring and overpriced though(and we ended up at Pierces’s instead). Unless the food there has improved, I also recommend going off premises. As someone else also said, Pierce’s is nearby and has great barbecue. Have a great time!

Ah, see about the pass.
I am not Irish but also burn easily so I understand about the sunscreen.
Have a great time!

Depending on time of the summer, it can be quite scorching hot and humid in Virginia. Being indoors for part of the day is not a bad idea. We did Colonial Williamsburgh in the mornings and evenings and left during mid day. We went to Water Country and had a blast. If your stay is free, and you bring your own snacks, it will be fun for a three day getaway. Have fun!
