Did the student know in advance that this is being shared? It just feels … wrong

Hopefully so…I’m sure we’ll get clarification in a moment. (And the reason my assumption would be yes is because the thread was initially closed by a moderator pending such clarification and then re-opened once the mod was satisfied with its appropriateness. So I am trusting moderation  )

I am wearing my clinical hat and it feels like a boundary violation. And a power differential between an adult and child. JMO.

Oh I thought it was a generalist thread. I didn’t know it was related to a specific student.

Would that be true if the student had pre-approved the post? Or would it still be an issue due to power differential? (This is not meant as a challenge - I am genuinely curious about this issue and the kind of boundaries that would apply.)

Too hard for me to accurately chance with just guesses at the kid’s in-context rank and rigor, but here is my best guess based on the limited info:
Accepted to all but Umichigan; WL at Michigan.

To be perfectly honest, in a power dynamic like this, the student may feel compelled to defer to the adult and comply, even if they might have not wanted to.

The ones I’ve always wondered about are the chance me threads where students post ā€œChance me and I’ll chance you backā€. I mean if the OP were qualified to chance other students shouldn’t they be able to adequately gauge their own chances? I agree with @skieurope, most of the time it’s just a parlour game akin to the portal astrology applicants indulge in in trying to pre-guess if they’ve been admitted. The vast majority of responders are unqualified to provide accurate feedback.

Accident post

I think people provide directional feedback…but websites like this wouldn’t or couldn’t exist without amateurs.

Even the pros may be amateurs to an OP - as every school might seek different things - and perhaps that’s why sometimes you see someone get into an Amherst as I read yesterday but not a Macalester - which in most senses from an admission POV might be two rungs below.

In the end, the website is open - and these websites encourage open response. There is no requirement for qualification or licensing.

Some take offense and they shouldn’t. Because the business model is that more and more should participate, not less or only those with related experience. If they want a closed website, they should go elsewhere and stop impugning on those following the rules.

I assure you the owners are looking for more and not less participation - in hopes of one day monetizing their operation…as Reddit just did the other day with a huge cash out.

Don’t forget, while it may not be to the posters, the CC is a business entity first and foremost.

I had a feeling last night this thread would be initiated.

Not sure what you’re getting at here. Nowhere did I say anything about changing the business model of CC nor did I say that the forums should be shut down. What I said was I don’t see the value in soliciting advice from other high school students, the vast majority who are as clueless as the OP.

My guess, assuming all state schools were OOS apps:

3.6 / TO =

Accepted OSU
WL Maryland
Rejected Michigan, Villanova, Wisconsin

and you’re not wrong. There may or may not be value in advice from many of us - but these websites are here exactly for that.

For anyone to ask - and for anyone to answer.

Not you specifically but there are some that take offense and even insult those that respond because they feel they don’t have a clue or direct experience - and those types of individuals should find another home because they are in the wrong website.

It’s open - even for high schoolers to respond and they may have different, unique and ultimately wise perspectives - and for anyone who doesn’t want to listen to what others say, it’s their right to ignore it.

Unfortunately, too many that disagree with others, get nasty.

They should remember that they’re on a site that is open and should be welcoming to all - which goes back to the original point - is there group think -

Some are ranking focused

Some are elitists in their nature

Some are value focused

Some have other things that tick their boxes

And all should be welcome without criticism. Critique sure but not criticism.

And in the end, any OP can decide which guidance they like, like in some parts, or not at all - no matter the ā€œqualificationā€ of the responder…

if that makes sense…

From my experience, if you disagree with someone, they sometimes get nasty - no matter how tactfully you try to make your point.

My guess for Ohio State assuming applied EA, would be initially deferred and then accepted in a later round. Depending on which state may have even won some merit.
