Guidance Help

Hello, I don’t know if I’m posting this in the right section of this forum or if there even is a right section of this forum for what I’m posting.

I graduated from high school in 2010 just shy of honors. For various reasons I couldn’t go straight to college. I tried every year after but the same problems and new ones always held me back. I was a smart kid in a bad situation. I didn’t have the help of my teachers, my guidance counselors or even my parents. My school guidance counselors, as kind as some of them were, dropped the ball with me. I don’t intend to sound like a whiny victim, I understand that if I had been more responsible, I could have found solutions to all of my problems. People encourage me to go to college and tell me that I’m too smart to let it go to waste but no one seems to understand what a confusing and frightening process applying for college is.

I’m not completely sure about what I want to study or what career I want to pursue but I know that I love history (mostly ancient and classical civilizations and anything pre-20th century) and languages (I studied French every year of junior high and high school with two years of elementary school, spend my free time learning Korean and hope to learn American Sign Language and Arabic). I was also told I was a good essay writer because my essays were clear, concise and well-structured.

What are you looking for? Are you looking for a peer to provide emotional support as you try to decide what to do with you life? Are you looking for a mentor to help you apply to college several years after graduating high school? I would suggest looking at community colleges or a 2 year program and getting an associates degree as a starting off point if a full college experience overwhelms you.
