GWC Internship @ Iowa State 2011

Actually my son emailed him on 1st april for an update and did not get a response. I think they got more applicants than they expected this year and are trying to figure out a way of selecting interns. In my opinion, their application was very basic - not as detailed as some of the others - making the selection process more difficult for them. Anyways good luck to everyone.

My son applied to this program. We did not get this email. We have not heard anything at all. That is worrisome. Why would they send it out to some applicants, but not all?

I spoke to them this morning. There were 160 applicants and 20 will be selected. The submitted application was given to all 3 mentors whose project id was selected in the application. They would then make their choice(s). The emails not going out to all the applicants was an oversight on their part.

12% acceptance rate??? that’s just a bit more than the Ivies!!! I’m scared. It appears that I’m the only one on the forum who got the email… I feel really weird about that.

Don’t worry about not getting an email until after Friday, per above.

Also, 12% is higher than Clark or RSI or TASP, although these aren’t exactly the same type of program.

It is too bad that they didn’t leave more room for content on the application. It makes it so much more difficult to differentiate among the applicants with only 2 questions with 200 word answers and gpa. They didn’t even ask for standardized test scores.

I agree; I was quite surprised that I did not need to write any full-length essay, submit an official transcript, etc.

Has anyone heard back on whether they have contacted the references, yet? I am assuming that doing so is at a professor’s discretion and mine haven’t said anything to me.

My son emailed them about the delay in response and didn’t get a response. That is just unprofessional! If they are 5 days late on their acceptance letters, they should expect emails asking when they will decide. Also, if they realized it was an oversight on their part that not everyone got the “we are late deciding” letter, then, they should resend it out to everyone. Oh well, I guess beggars can’t be choosers…

Telephone them and see what happens.

If I were a gambler, I’d wager US$5 that they would respond to a phone call. But I’m not a gambler. But phones are how you get stuff done, guaranteed. Email is usually met with limited success.

anyone has any news?

Yeah they were late last year as well. They have a lot of applicants with only one or two adcoms so it is natural that they would be somewhat late.

And from what I’ve drawn from this internship over the last two years, they care a lot about diversity and academic performance is not their main focus. Of course, they would definitely prefer a 3.8 to a 3.5 but I’m sure that they would also like to see some increased diversity, like a Malawian immigrant or a Pacific Islander.

Do any of you know of anyone who has gone to this program in years past? If so, what did they/you think of it?

No email yet that I’ve received. Sigh.

i’m getting kind of frustrated :frowning:
I really want to know…

I also applied and I haven’t gotten anything yet D:

Hah. I knew they wouldn’t have sent anything out by April 8.

This is so annoyingggg.

good call.

I think we’re going to get it on Tuesday… maybe hopefully even Monday.
arghhhh

Whoever chose TAL nucleases, aka project 42(?), they chose a girl for that project. Just letting you guys know; I know this because the mentor is my friend’s dad.

I didn’t choose that one, and I’m not a girl :).

I just wish they would send the emails now if they already have people selected!

I just realized that the undergraduate part of GWC seems to link to the same research projects as the high school section–even less chances for us D:.

Is that the only girl that they chose?
