Hacked Facebook Account

Maybe I’m just dense, but what is the benefit to the hacker?

I’ve wondered the same! Unless it leads to access to more of your accounts.

They can contact all your friends as you. Once a Facebook page has been hacked they usually start Facebook messaging people posing as you. They can ask for money or try to hack into your friends’ pages. If you’ve used your Facebook password elsewhere and they access that they can potentially get into other accounts. They can also spread misinformation, political or otherwise. They can sell stuff posing as you.

I moderate a public Facebook group for fans of band. We try to keep a pretty tight hold on it, but you would be amazed at the number of fake accounts that try to post in the group. They will all be trying to post some random viral video of a woman saving something from being eaten by an anaconda or a near miss wreck or porn. Most of those accounts are screened out by the questions we ask before they can post. If they can’t answer the questions about the band then they obviously aren’t real fans so I decline and block them. But there are some folks who try to join so they can spam the group with bootleg merch. They will answer the questions halfway decently, but when I look at their profiles I seem them hawking these bootleg print on demand t-shirts for other bands so they get blocked too.

Two-factor absolutely everything you can two-factor!

People also do shopping through their Facebook ID, and they have birthdays, where they went to school, favorite band…all critical info to unlock your other accounts.
