A barbecue, what else?
Neighborhood pool party. Saw some fireworks at a nearby neighborhood last night from our guest room window.
We are going for a beach walk, then to a new lake side beer garden to watch soccer, home for a cookout, and then back to the lake to see a concert and fireworks.
We are in a brief window between summer LAX travels for D30, so we are trying to chillax. Burgers and hotdogs at home, using our new pool which is functional despite not being cosmetically finished, and lighting off a few low-key fireworks.
By the way, I am just old enough to have very vague memories of the Bicentennial. It does feel like we are doing it a lot more low-key this time, but that suits us.
Bought my first corn on the cob of the season! I enjoyed the traditional shopping experience: buy it - cash only - out of the back of a pickup parked by the side of the road. I said I wanted three - and the seller responded “three dozen”? Ha ha ha no, three ears.

I believe my Mom made a vanilla sheet cake decorated as a flag, with blueberries for blue and strawberries for red.
I also believe I did not like it, and only ate the ice cream.
There is also a significant chance I am blurring together different moments of petty grievances for my young self.
First year we do not have any plans (usually someone in our circle will volunteer to host, but with temps 100+ no one did, and I am SO SO glad). Ironically this is the first year that I don’t need to leave a bbq early to sit with my dog during the fireworks, and our town and surrounding towns canceled them due to heat, storms, and power outages from last nights storm.

What meal celebrates 250 years of American independence more than Cheezits with peanut butter? Take that, horrified Europe . . . .

This afternoon I almost made a pb&j on a hot dog roll, it’s around 80 degrees inside my house and hunger hits differently. Instead H made little burgers on those hot dog rolls.

I love a good “hotburger” (which is what we all call oblong hamburger patties on hotdog buns, I assume).
We just got power back. If it holds, I am pitching indoor hotdogs, hamburgers tomorrow.

I’m telling them stories about how when I was a kid, there were no phones with flashlights and Internet in blackouts, just candles and packs of cards.
You know, back when I was a drummer boy in the Revolutionary War . . . .

I turned 18 that day. Much older today!
Denver was much less developed in those days. I remember coming back from fireworks at a country club up the street and sitting on our porch and watching fireworks all along the front range. You could see tons of them, both organized displays and those set off illegally. It went on until midnight.
This year? Many of the displays have been cancelled because of the fire danger and ALL private ones are illegal; they always are but they are really going to enforce it with big fines. They have drones on patrol. Denver now has drone shows downtown but I think there are fireworks at the baseball game tonight.

There were supposed to be fireworks at the end of our lake, and they are usually very nice. But they were supposed to start at 9…and the rain was just ending. I have no idea if they happened…or not. But really, the weather tonight doesn’t sound any better…rain again starting in the afternoon.
We need the rain so I’m not complaining!
We had a July 4th picnic at home. Hamburgers, corn on the cob (local), and potato salad. It was very pleasant…not hot and humid!

We didn’t make any plans so everything was spontaneous.
We went to Chili’s for lunch and then we saw the movie, Disclosure.
Not my cup of tea, but my husband really liked it.
I don’t like feeling tense in a movie theater. I decided to go to it because I’m always the one making the movie choices. This time I decided to go with his choice.
