<p>The radio station that I am listening to is broadcasting a live (from Salzburg) tribute to Mozart’s 250th birthday. It occurs to me that on the various discussions of which XM radio stations that people listen to that I haven’t seen the classical stations listed. Are there any classical music lovers out there? I find the paucity of radio stations that play classical music these days to be disturbing.</p>
<p>I agree…I play the oboe and still take lessons from a master each week. I love classical music too.</p>
<p>I will occasionally tune in the classical station on the way to work when I need an antidote for road rage! 
so I did hear of the 250 celebration. So with no records, tapes or DVDs to record the music from back then do you think the Mozart symphony played today sounds exactly the same as it did 200+ years ago? I would think so, but how do we know for sure?</p>
<p>The church bells around Salzburg are currently ringing to commemorate the exact time of his birth (8PM )</p>
<p>NJres: there are orchestras who play music exclusively with antique instruments, so I presume they come pretty close to it.</p>
<p>the symphony is having a Mozart festival- we have a great symphony and several city schools who have nationally acclaimed student orchestras- Seattle may be the city of grunge, but we still like our black tie as well</p>
<p>I mostly listen to news on the radio but also the classical and jazz stations-</p>
<p>yay for mozart…i wish everybody would celebrate it and concerts are important…he needs respect fo his work</p>
<p>Mozart didn’t really write most of the music attributed to him. It was the Earl of Oxford.</p>
<p>I love Mozart and should engage that love by listening more often. He’s handicapped in this house because very little of his music is used for ballets. I was struck by the 40th Symphony when I was young and it’s never left me.</p>
<p>umm thedad…i think you’re getting mozart and shakespeare mixed up. of course thats easy to see being as they lived about 150 years apart, lived about 700 miles apart, and one wrote music while the other wrote plays.</p>
<p>also, the title of earl of oxford didn’t even exist by the time mozart lived…</p>
<p>yeah…sorry…its just that you know…mozart is kinda the greatest musical genius ever and claiming he didn’t write his music is pretty frickin rigoddamndiculous.</p>
<p>Mozart is the best. I read a quote in the SFChronicle attributed to him the other day. He said he composed music as easily as a sow piddles, or something like that.</p>

<p>I heard an item on NPR this morning about Salzburg’s exploitation of Mozart. Rather funny, considering Mozart could not wait to get out of there. Apparently there’s a Mozart perfume along with the usual touristy stuff.</p>
<p>I’ve been listening to Mozart operas on my computer for the last few days. Also the Vesperae. It contains one of the loveliest arias ever written.</p>

<p>anywho - speaking of genius…while i don’t remember the particulars, there’s one story where mozart heard some opera and he asked for a copy of it, and whoever composed it refused to give him one. so he just wrote the whole thing down from memory after listening to it once. thats pretty sick.</p>

<p>Like most who have posted here, I love Mozart’s compositions and think his piano sonatas are great. Ive played a couple of them, and i found them enjoyable.</p>
<p>Jag relates a fairly obscure story. As I recall, Mozart swiped the idea for an opera based on “The Dream of Scipio” from an Italian friar who was his mentor, and then presented it as his own. He had in fact made it his own, musically, but the good father was quite ticked off at first.</p>
