Harvard Class of 2028 Official Thread

did not get an interview as a Canadian when everyone around me has. how cooked am i

My son, who is also an international student, has not been interviewed either. We share the same concern as you.

Harvard does interviews until mid-March (don’t know the exact cutoff date) so there’s still time!

what is the difference between very early interview ( few days after just submitting application) and current or 1-2 months later? still based on alumni availability?

Honestly, no idea. But domesticated, there are speculations that (depending on the region) the later the interview, the more likely an applicant will be waitlisted. I live on the east coast, and surrounded by LOTS of alumni. My interviewer told me that my report was due on 2/11 (because he accidentally emailed the wrong address and it was the week of). Based on the timeline of Harvard admission from the court case, I think that was for my region’s subcomittee meeting. But if you live in an area that lacks alumni such as North Carolina, you probably won’t have an interview so none of this applies

I think the interview happened to late Jan to Late Feb is kind at the stage the interview might be a relative important weighing factor during the application evaluation (maybe as you said-- ready for subcommittee review). Also noticed, for 2023-2024 application cycle, it seems Harvard adds lots of new admission officers during July to Oct 2023… seems to align with the plan to follow the superior court order?

Interesting - D24 got her interview request a few days after applications closed and her interviewer said he had a cut off of was January; however it may just have been he was super efficient and was going to be away or busy after that of course

Does anyone else have an interview this weekend? They wanted last weekend, but my kid was out of town for another college event that was mandatory and this was the next option. It seems so late.

its so over. still no interview.

Same here. I’ve just accepted it at this point that they’ve already rejected me

So confusing…some anecdotes I’ve read claim that the interview is not “necessary” for admission and others say completely the opposite. I guess at the very least we know having one makes someone feel like they had a chance. Best of luck to everyone either way!

My son got his interview in early January and everyone thought it was a big deal but let’s be realistic for a moment here. It’s Harvard, we have better chances at winning the mega millions lottery than getting in. It’s completely random and based on available alumni in your region to do the interviews. This has been a difficult year I wouldn’t be surprised if admissions had trouble rounding alumni to do interviews. So try not to read into the whole who got interviewed and who didn’t. In the end, the only thing that really matters is what you have on your application and if it fits into the class they are trying to build. Like I said it’s pot luck :four_leaf_clover:.

No interview call for me DD. I assume, that means it’s a rejection …

any schools with or without interview really can not predict if you will win the “lottery” or not. People’s another theory: the interview will hurt you more than helping you as this is not determined factor— a not good interview will disqualify what was written in the application. the nice interview will not boost your chance too-- only if you are really brilliant interview to disclose the very new and outstanding character not reflected in your application – then that interview might determine your chance…

I’ve seen a few posts on Reddit about Harvard likely letters—anyone here get one?

Honestly do people get into Harvard without an interview?

According to people, Harvard accepted around 90% of students who interviewed when Harvard was sued, and this data was revealed. However, time has passed, so I think something has changed. I’ve seen some who got in without an interview on Reddit, and some were rejected even after two interviews. We never know.

Sounds like this isn’t the norm. I think I’ve only seen 1 post on Reddit that claimed their kid didn’t have an interview and got in

(1) Harvard will try to organize things so that every viable candidate will be interviewed. Particularly with Zoom being an option, it is a rare viable candidate who is not interviewed, regardless of location. (2) Paradoxically, the interview itself, particularly the usual one done by an alum, normally has zero impact on the admissions outcome because alum interviewers generally love their candidates at rates far, far higher than the percentage admitted, rendering the interview largely useless as an admissions tool although it is a great opportunity for the candidate to understand Harvard better.

“Likely letters” were a feature of the period where some schools, like Harvard, experimented with eliminating early decision/early action.

“Likely letters” for Ivy League schools today are almost exclusively for recruited athletes who do not apply at the early action/early decision phase. Such “likely letter” recipients often are athletes who manifest talents that are probably better served or rewarded outside of the Ivy League. The exceptions to this pattern are so few that it’s “unlikely” for rumors about it to be true or relevant, particularly in Harvard’s case.
