Harvard Parent Thread

guitars, I don’t know how the years just flew by. It just seems like yesterday that you started this thread. It truly has been a great experience, and I look forward to seeing all of you at graduation. When do you plan on arriving, and where do you plan on staying? Also, does your son know about his plans after graduation?

Congratulations parents of seniors! A little advice for graduation–be at the gates very early for Commencement. There will be hoards racing in for the few seats with views. Try for a jumbo screen view so you can see the actual speakers. For Baccalaureate and Class Day, it is easier to find good seats as the many other grad schools will not be there.

I just received an email today confirming Junior Parent Weekend, along with a link to last year’s program, and a promise for the current program soon. Looking forward to all the upcoming events.

I too am in disbelief that these 4 years have flown by…we are staying at a hotel Wednesday and Thursday night and I may go up a day or two earlier to help D moving etc. What are all the seniors planning on doing next year, job hunting, grad school etc?

My D will be working at a consulting firm in Boston. After that she plans on attending business school.

It might be fun to try and meet anyone who is there the night before or the night after and doesn’t have any family commitments, most of us will have a lot and it might be difficult! My kids would find it weird, they are “over” CC but who knows. This thread started with Guitars and the Class of 2012, it might be fun to try and meet and at least toast to the class of 2012 and its stellar parents! LOL!

it would be fun to try to meet up. My son has applied and been accepted to law school. He’s been accepted to HLS and a few other wonderful schools. He’s still trying to figure out the whole fin. aid things before his final decision.

congratulations to all the parents of seniors, it’s been a great ride!

guitars101, congratulations to your son on his acceptance to HLS and other ones as well. I didn’t think that they gave fin. aid for law school…but maybe I am mistaken. It’ll be fun to meet up. Maybe there is a way we can meet up at the family picnic if we all plan on meeting at a certain place and time. We could all communicate via pm, so we can recognize each other…maybe with the upside down pins:)

Congratulations to all seniors and their parents.

lousyanamom, you’re right, HLS does not give out merit awards. My wording may have been confusing, I apologize. What I meant to say is that we are waiting to hear back from all the schools to see where he did earn merit money and then compare it to HLS and go from there. We still don’t know how much exactly it will cost at HLS or what the payments plans are, etc… (all the stuff that makes me want to vomit :)

Great idea! we can come up with a plan to meet up as the time gets closer.

Congratulations Guitars, That is quite the achievement you must be very proud. My D wants to go to grad school but is going to work for a year or two first to get some experience. Paying for grad school makes me want to Vomit as well!

hahahaha! EAO1227, I feel the pain

Anyone plan on ordering the Diploma display from the Harvard Shop? The cheapest one is for $130. Has anyone ordered one of these and are they worth the price?

Although the dipoma frames are a bit overpriced (as all Harvard merchandise is), the frames are good quality, and allow you to slide the diploma in for a very professional appearance. If you choose the model with just the embossed veritas emblem, rather than the frame with the illustration, the price is very close to what you would pay a private framer. The frames come in a strong cardboard case which is handy to keep for moves.

If your student is a coop member, I think you can get 10% off the full price. (Coop membership is only $1.- a year.)

I was just at HLS today and as an alum I am JEALOUS!! The new Wasserstein Building is amazing and is transformative of the student experience. Congrats to your son Guitars101, if he attends The Law School, he will not have a Paper Chase experience at all (like I did–Clark Byse was the inspiration for Kingsfield) --but the best legal education in the best environment possible.

As a “freshman parent” all I can say is well done to all of the “senior parents”.

fauve, thank you so much for sharing the info on the diploma frames. I am trying to convince my DD to get the coop membership and purchase it. She had texted me some days ago with “Too expensive”.

We bought one of the pricey diploma frames and don"t regret it. It looks very nice.

good to know about the diploma frames. Yikes, $130! has anyone ordered the announcements? I know that Balfour and the Coop have them. Any other less expensive places to order??? thanks

I don’t believe there are other places (than the student agency and Balfour) to order the announcements, due to the copyright arrangements with Harvard.

We ordered announcements from Balfour/CB rather than the student agency. The Balfour/CB Co. ones are heavier paper, and do not have the copyright “c” symbol printed under the Veritas emblem, on the front of the foldover. The prices are similar, as I remember. You can economize by omitting the envelope stickers, and other extras; as well as ordering the minimal amount.

As this seemed to be a last hurrah for undergrad expenses, I thought they were a worthy investment. The grandparents loved them.

My son is also a senior and I would love to meet up with the other senior parents at graduation. Didn’t see anyone at JPW.

On the subject of graduation, I have purchased (over the last few years) some John Harvard stamps to use on my son’s graduation announcements and other cards. In my normal way, I have overbought. The stamps have a face value of $.56 (which now works out to only slightly higher than current postal rates) and I paid more than $.60 each for them. If anyone is interested, please pm me. I could probably sell them on eBay for a lot more, but I would rather have someone use them that has a connection to Harvard. Especially the parents that have contributed so much to this thread. The stamp is a picture of the John Harvard statue and was apparently done for a “famous Americans” series a long time ago.

I’m glad for the information about the frames. We have been debating that here and I like the idea of immediate protection for a very expensive piece of paper.

This is certainly getting exciting now as so many want to meet at graduation. Wouldnt it be funny if some of our kids knew one another ;)
