Cambridgeside Galleria is a good place to go for most things and I think there is a BB&B there. If not, I know there are Dept. Stores. Theres a Target pretty close (around 10-15 min in a taxi).

Urgent and very profound Harvard question here – will September likely be shorts weather in Cambridge? D lives in shorts, flip-flops and sundresses - hoping to ease her into this whole Northeast climate change.

September you’re good with summery type clothing, like shorts and flipflops. Move-in day last year was ridiculously hot, and I needed a fan or two for the first few weeks of school (sorry folks, no a/c!). By like the end of September, early October, though, it’s already getting cooler out. Definitely make sure she has fall clothing when she moves in, because it comes pretty quickly. Also, beware…we don’t get much of a transition. It seriously feels like it goes from summer to late fall within only a few days, and that lasts until like late April.

My SoCal born and raised daughter managed to stick with her shorts and flip flops past the second snow storm her freshman year. She then finally gave in and put on long pants and shoes.

No Bed Bath & Beyond in the Galleria, alas. There’s a Macy’s home store, but that’s a little more expensive.

There’s a BB&B near Fenway (Red Line inbound to Park, change to Green B, C, or D, get off at Fenway), and another that’s a bit of a walk from the Wellington T stop (Red Line inbound to Downtown Crossing, change to Orange Line, get off at Wellington).

The closest Target to Harvard is on Arsenal Street in Watertown (take the 70 or 70A bus from Harvard Station), although there’s also one south of the city near Andrew Station (Red Line inbound to Andrew).

And by the way, to get to the Cambridgeside Galleria, take the Red Line inbound to Kendall/MIT, and either walk or take the free mall shuttle from there. The mall is also within walking distance of Lechmere Station on the Green Line, and you can take the 69 bus from Harvard to Lechmere.

I apologize for this post, but I can’t seem to find the posts that have the info on it about shipping things to harvard.

Is there an address that items can be sent to Harvard and waiting for the students to pick up on move in day? I believe I read on this site somewhere that there was some type of tent set up that day??

Help with these details :)

Can someone please post the nearest Staples, or Office Supply Store as well as the nearest Grocery Store (not a convenience store). Thanks.

guitars101
you will find this info in the parents handbook.

do any of the dorms have air conditioning?

There’s actually a Staples in Harvard Square, so that’s at least very close. :)

The closest Shaw’s/Star Market to Harvard is on Beacon Street in Somerville, which is a bit of a hike, but not a huge hike, from Harvard Square. It might be easier to get to the Shaw’s in Porter Square (Red Line outbound to Porter) or the one near MIT (1 bus). There’s also a Shaw’s in Brighton which is accessible from the 70 or 70A bus from Harvard.

There is a Whole Foods near Alewife Station (Red Line outbound to Alewife).

thank you molliebatmit. can you help me by responding to my air conditioning post?

None of the dorms have air conditioning. It’s really unnecessary when all is said and done, since it’s cold most of the school year. You’re uncomfortable for the first few weeks, but that’s about it–just bring a fan.

guitars101, you can ship boxes to your DD/DS Harvard address, which should be something like: XXXX Harvard Yard Mail Center, Cambridge, MA 02138. When the boxes arrive, s/he can pick them up in the basement of the Science Center.

MSMDAD,

Thanks for the shipping info :)

guitars101, We too are staying at Royal Sonesta-in an earlier post you asked about transportation to Harvard from Hotel-was wondering if you were able to find out anything? Thanks,

There is a Bed, Bath & Beyond close by in Somerville:

Somerville Store #810
119 Middlesex Avenue
Somerville, MA 02145
(617) 629-4423

When we did our shopping at our local BB&B we had the choice of Fenway store or Somerville store to pick up. They are about the same distance from campus but we are staying in hotel closer to Somerville so we chose this store. We were also told it was larger.

There is a Target just a couple of miles north at 180 Somerville Ave
Somerville, MA 02143
(617) 776-4036

Thanks vetereran Harvard parents for the great info. Here’s one more - do you recommend having a printer along with the computer? We’re thinking probably yes on this one but a little concerned over space.

My S had to turn in problem sets and response papers every week. He had a 3-in-1 which came in very handy.

Bring a printer! My roommates borrowed mine all the time, which got very annoying. Just bring your own–it’s worth the space when there’s an essay due in an hour and you need to rush to get it printed and turned in. I got a cheap and relatively compact one at Target.

My daughter also has the 3-in-1 as Marite’s son has. I do suggest bringing a printer. When she has massive printing to do, she does it on the school’s printers to conserve her ink and paper.
