Harvard SCEA Class of 2020 Applicant Thread

@Sajidur4 Exactly. I never understood the point in that. It is not like there is a single benefit to this system.
BTW, in Iran, students choose a path ( Life science, Mathematical and Physical Science, Humanities and the Social Sciences, Literature and Language, Trade Schools) in 10th grade, and you can exam out of previous courses, so it is slightly better. I personally have taken both the Math and life science classes, just to maintain my freedom.

I would like to concentrate in biochemistry and minor in psychology. I’m not sure if a pre-med track will be necessary since my major courses will fufill those in the MCAT.

@Sajidur4 Do Bengals have the same aversion to studying humanities as people in Iran do? I had these friend who would’ve achieved a lot in something like Law or Econ, but his father forced him into the Med Path. Ironically, he is afraid of blood and gore. This also means that some of our politicians and lawmakers are lazy students who didn’t make it into other paths. It seems that most Asian countries are like this.

I plan on concentrating in computer science / and taking lots of classes in biology and neuroscience related things

@TLCO99 I will likely concentrate in neurobiology and/or chemical and physical biology with secondary fields of computer science or math.

Also, I’m new to the site, so nice to meet all of you :slight_smile:

@anxiousEm welcome!

Best of luck to everyone this week!

This is something I’ve been thinking about. So we all applied early for different reasons, but mainly because we love Harvard. Do you personally believe in the admissions advantage of applying early? Are you one of those “Harvard says there is no advantage so there is no advantage”, or are you someone that says “apply early or kiss Harvard goodbye because regular is truly a lottery”? Just curious you guys! I fall in the second group, kids on campus told me they applied early and have heard it’s the only way to go.

@nsliyromanov a little of both. I’ve been told by admissions that “no advantage, but you hear a response early” which I like. I want to hear a response early rather than way way later. But I’ve also heard from almost all entirely college students that they wish they would’ve applied early because they firmly believe it ups their chances. And also my brother applied early to an Ivy and got in. He is an extremely bright and accomplished individual, but even he believes his chances increased with his early application.

Hey all! Just popping over from the Yale SCEA thread, reading some of the other schools’ boards. You guys are hilarious… It’s nice to know that everyone else is just as stressed!! Good luck this week! You are all so lucky you find out the 10th. We have to wait until the 15th! Fingers crossed for you all… Hang in there, it’s the home stretch

@nsliyromanov I firmly believe in being early to everything, including college applications. I had the opportunity to send in my application early, and so I did. Although there may not be a statistical advantage of applying early, I believe there is a mental advantage; there is a shorter wait, which in turn results in a less excruciating senior year. If I am deferred, at least I know that in December, rather than being rejected in April. It has been my childhood dream to go to Harvard, and I wanted to start fulfilling that dream as early on as I could.

Of course It could totally change but as of now i am major government minor spanish!

@mjstewart1224 good luck to you too! That’s the best part about all this! We are all in this together (had to go Troy Bolton on this one) so we are all rooting for eachother. Good luck to all the Yale people!

@nsliyromanov I personally think early action is an advantage in admissions in SOME ways. Its single choice so they know that Harvard is your first choice. The main advantage is knowing early and I just hope that if someone gets deferred in EA, they will be considered a bit more favorably later when compared to the RD kids. The huge disadvantage is that REA is when athletes and legacies apply. I don’t believe that an alum parent helps, but usually those parents are fairly successful or mindful of the application process. So there are pluses and minuses!

@Soheils yes, they do, especially the parents. The ideal jobs in their minds are “doctors” and “engineers.” So, they encourage the guys to pursue science and math and the girls to pursue the arts. Gender inequality is like a part of the culture :confused:

In Turkey, once a student enters high school, they choose a “path”: either science/mathematics based, or humanities based. These courses help prepare the students for their future careers. Although I have not gone through the education system in Turkey, I know it is EXTREMELY standardized test-heavy. Prior to middle school, these students take a preliminary exam to seat them in one of the various schools in the area. The better the score, the “better” the school.

Anyone know when Harvard will release the official time of release for the decisions?
I heard that they send out an email with the date and time…or something similar?
Anyone know when this will come out?

@Nervousa No idea :frowning:

What if Harvard suddenly decided not to have decisions be the 10th but the 7th instead and we would all be caught off guard.

@tuty143 I don’t think they would be THAT evil.
