Harvard is making a deal. Likely inked this week and then I think WL closes or a handful come off. https://www.nytimes.com/2025/07/28/us/politics/trump-harvard-payment.html
they’ve been reporting about both sides making negotiations about a potential deal for the last month. i just think this is another offer that was made but seeing as none of the previous ones have stuck clearly, i don’t think this one would prevail in particular.

Does anyone have any idea about how many International Students have already deferred admission? I’m guessing that a significant number will only defer in the next few days, but I’m curious if anyone has an initial figure.
It says Harvard is “signaling” to make a deal. So not sure about the timing and impact on the international situation. But obviously this is an interesting development.

No. My guess is currently the standard 30-50 people that come off yearly.

I doubt that’ll happen. The government will ask something of them they won’t want to give up, and then it’ll be back to the courts.

Harvard is very unlikely to make deal with Trump. Note the key sentence from the NYY article: “Harvard is also skeptical of Columbia’s agreement to allow an outside monitor to oversee its sweeping arrangement with the government.”
Harvard is right. A federal judge must oversee any deal. Anything else (including a deal like Columbia’s) will just be a starting point to Trump insisting on more and more concessions over the years.
And Trump is very unlikely to allow Judge Burroughs to oversee a deal. If he does, it would be a complete surrender by Trump.

I think this next and last wave is going to happen at the end of next week so they have all their deferrals confirmed this Thursday and have time to deliberate. What sucks is that I’m still on other top tier waitlists and think they won’t close off until Harvard finalizes the domino motion.

Sounds like a few people will get off Duke waitlist, which was previously closed. People are saying it’s due to the international visa issue. If this is happening to Duke, it’ll happen to Harvard as well, and probably to a larger extent.

Looking at the relevant reddit Duke post this morning, it seems a lot of people received email. So the international student impact is indeed quite significant as we suspected.

yo someone call harvard and ask em rn cus i called and they gave the same freaking answer of they don’t know but since it depends on who picks up the calls pls someone else call and check
just received this email and text saying they want me to reply within 24 hours and “If you respond positively, you will hear back from us quickly with a decision.”
Quite a few replies in the same post received the same offer. So it looks like Duke has had significant international deferment.
