Harvey Weinstein

Big stars with power wouldn’t have been harassed. Their experiences with him would have been completely different than struggling, up and coming stars. And while it’s possible they could have heard rumors or suggestions, it doesn’t mean they would think they should listen without either evidence or hearing it directly. And that’s if they have even ever heard those rumors, which big stars wouldn’t necessarily have. What they do from this point forward is what I will really pay attention to.

I am confused as to why anyone thinks it surprising that there weren’t jokes on SNL in the past or whatever about a guy the vast majority of America hasn’t ever heard of. People outside the movie business wouldn’t know and we are aware already that there is a lot of predators taking advantage in Hollywood.

The trail of sleaze runs deep on this one. That Meryl Streep “didn’t have a clue” is believable as she is generally clueless. But I don’t believe it. Of course politics, especially liberal politics, is verboten on the forum so I guess we will have to wait for others to dig those trenches.

My own feeling is that Hollywood is playing a waiting game to see how much power (if any) Weinstein is going to have going forward. He has wielded so much power now for decades that people are probably very wary of jumping too quick to attack him. No one is going to say anything until they are sure he no longer has any power. I don’t think that is clear from his termination, especially since his brother is the other half of the company. Not sure he can fill Harvey’s shoes so will Harvey now just be behind the curtain but still running the show?

And all those relationships he cemented over the years do they just evaporate overnight? I don’t think so and that’s especially true among men under these circumstances. I bet there is a sizable population of men in that industry of his generation who think this is all much to do about nothing.

Good point, HarvestMoon. And frankly I’m glad people like Meryl Streep WAIT before speaking out, wanting some confirmation, maybe fact-checking before issuing a statement. That seems reasonable to me. After all, there have been cases of people jumping on the bandwagon before all the facts are known, with lamentable results. (Duke rape case, anyone?)

My guess is that if he is truly “dethroned” the stories will come out of the woodwork quickly. Most of them probably true.

The New York Times former editor responds to the accusations:

He’s basically admitted it – although hasn’t commented on specific women.

Sometimes, the first 140 characters about something is inaccurate or incomplete, so some have learned to exercise care about when and how to act outraged. (Whether or not that applies to Meryl Strip in particular is another story.)

Zinhead Are you implying that famous actors who’ve worked in films that Weinstein produced got parts initially because they went gave in to HW’s perversions?

The cover-up ensnares Matt Damon, Russell Crowe and the editors at the NY Times in 2004.

I’m surprised we have people on this forum who know Meryl Streep personally and can state so clearly what she is and is not clueless about. I had no idea we had such celebrity connections.

My older daughters pediatrician came highly recommended by friends with slightly older kids. We thought he was great too. Nice, knowledgeable and conscientious. I couldn’t believe it when he abruptly retired right around the time my younger daughter was born. Especially when it was on the news that his medical license had been revoked over some scandalous, inappropriate behavior with kids some 20 years before.

I wonder whether people would think I was clueless or turning a blind eye.

Well, since half of them spelled her name wrong…

I was hoping that was autocorrect.

^^ That article brings up a good point: that while there hasn’t been a lot of condemnation, so far NO ONE has publicly come to HW’s defense, despite his efforts over the weekend to rally support.

Yes, the silence may be deafening - both ways.

Another reason not to comment: look at how those who do are torn apart. So far, I’ve seen one A list star has commented and she has still been criticized.

@Broomfield2 -

I have no evidence of that. However, I am suggesting that this type of behavior is common in the industry. Since the vast majority of famous actors started out as unknowns desperate for a big break, it would not be surprising that a significant number of actors said yes when someone in the position of Mr. Weinsten made a demand. Additionally, if an actor got a part because they said yes, they would not be likely to broadcast that to the general public.

I don’t know Meryl personally as she graduated 3 mos before I started college (but I do have a copy of her class yearbook  ) but I do know people and faculty who did know her personally. “Clueless” is not likely a word that would have been used to describe her.

Meryl Streep gave a standing ovation at the Oscars for a man who anally raped a teenage girl and was on the run from justice. So her judgement on these things is flawed to say the least.

A lot of people’s judgement about supporting admitted or accused sexual predators is suspect.
