Quote from Newsweek,
If one is going to talk about flawed judgment … this thread will go political again very quickly.
Well, I think much of our country has flawed “judgement on these things” as I’m sure we could toss out dozens of instances across all aspects of our society that could show it.
I can’t understand why anyone, not just Streep, could support Polanski.
As I said though, it baffles me across society, not just in the confines of politics or Hollywood where I think most of us have already realized it’s happening.
It really doesn’t have to go political to see examples elsewhere. I mean, look at what happens when there are discussions about college rapes and harassment. We see the same types of discussions and criticisms with the recent University of Rochester professor or the fraternity stuff. Hollywood is made up of people who are going to be just as flawed.
We keep seeing cases where some star professor gets outed for harassment finally, after having harassed female students his entire career. K-12 teachers and coaches, too.
I hate the movie ‘Forrest Gump’. Why? Because of the scene where the school authority says along the lines of - just HOW much do you want your son to go to school? Then you hear Sallie whopping it up and the man saying to Forrest on the way out- your mama really wants you in school.
Disgusting behavior is everywhere
Almost every day the paper has a story about male and female teachers who have had sex with students. You just have to ask “What in the heck is WRONG with some people?” I was reading a forum for doctors and medical students and read how many of them had been harassed by patients, how many of them had had patients masturbating when the doctors came into their rooms to examine them. I know a lot of women who have seen men whipping it out and leering at them on buses, trains, on walking paths, etc. Are there so many indecent people?
Susan Sarandan has said in the past that she was harassed. Many of the leading ladies are very quiet now.
I have to return to the incredible list of films produced by MiraMax and the Weinsteins and be really, really sorry that this has happened not only for the sake of the abused, but for the sake of the art of film.
Not to overstate the matter, but it’s like the Thomas Jefferson conundrum, in a way.
I don’t always agree with Lena Dunham, but she has some great points:
This statement from Glenn Close rings truer to me than Streep’s

I’m sure as more release statements, they will get better and better as they have had more time to reflect than those who went first.
You’re a prominent actress or director. You, like Glenn Close, hear vague rumors that Mr. X, a producer, sexually harasses young actors-- young female actors or young male actors or both, but the vague rumors say that X is a harasser. What do you do? How should you act when you hear a vague rumor?
Re: Lauren O’Connor’s memo.
Until I read the NYTimes article, I hadn’t thought about how distressing it would be for the female employees/assistants who were asked to book the “business meetings” at the hotel. It adds another dimension to the abuse. Get a female assistant to make the appointment with a female actress. “Meet in the restaurant at the hotel”. Actress gets to the hotel, and is told to go up to HW’s room.
So manipulative. Ugh.
From Jessica Valenti, on Twitter:
Men: Women who heard murmurings about Weinstein had a responsibility to come forward!
Also men: HOW DARE YOU TARNISH A MAN’S REPUTATION WITH NO EVIDENCE
There are no words -

Unfortunately, there are always the women apologizers for these creeps. Shameful.
And one wonders why victims of both genders are hesitant to speak out about such things and why these pigs keep getting away with their behavior…
Sometimes the world just doesn’t make any sense at all.

Isn’t it the point of a great movie to reveal an ugly truth? I understand the sentiment, but you seem to blame the messenger.
I am a Mary Poppins kind of movie person. I know bad things happen in the world, but when I escape reality with a movie, I don’t want more reality.
I quit watching the Oscars when I learned it wasn’t a fair voting process.
