People are concentrating on comments by A list or B list stars, but the actors I knew who had been asked for sexual favors in return for parts were no-names who would be lucky to get Equity rates for the plays they acted in. This is not just about executives like Weinstein, but the entire industry suffers from this affliction.
If what Daily Mail reports is true, DK has lost her marbles.
I have been very, very lucky that I have not encountered a harasser. Maybe because I had very nasty chemicals in the hood within my reach… Although I dunno how much that was a deterrent - at one biotech, glass doors have been installed in all executive offices after the CEO suddenly departed “for personal reasons.” Yes, the case of “open secrets” folks learned about after the fact. That dude was a real narcissist.
“NY times made note of the fact that SNL or late night comics have not done any Harvey material even though they skewered Ailes and O’reilly for the same behavior. Just because he’s liberal he shouldn’t get a pass!”
When SNL skewered him after the scandal broke O’ Reilly was still on the air and claiming he’d done nothing wrong . It took Fox almost 3 weeks to fire him.
It took Fox more than 2 weeks to get rid of Ailes during which time Fox personnel issued statements of support. When it did get rid of him it did so with a A joint statement from James Murdoch and Lachlan Murdoch, Fox’s CEO and co-executive chairman, respectively, reading : “We join our father in recognizing Roger’s remarkable contributions to our company . . . "
As of Saturday night Weinstein had taken a leave of absence ( he did so within hours of the news breaking) . It took his company around 3 days to fire him. It said he was terminated immediately for misconduct.
One of my friends’ reaction was “who the bleep is a Harvey Weinstein? Sounds like an entitled pig. Is he really famous or something?” I suppose that reflects the general population… we are an enlightened bunch here in our cc micro universe. There would have been a few “huh?” moments of the SNL did a thing about him…
I’m surprised The Weinstein Co. wasn’t called out before for having a nine-member, all-male board of directors. Pretty glaring indicator of the culture at that company IMO.
How rare is an all male board? I didn’t,t think it was all that rare for a privately held company.
Given recent developments, I’d say it was a BIG mistake for that company.
An all male board is common. I think having 9 members is more rare than it being all male. I’ve set up tons of corps and LLCs and it is not at all unusual to have only men running them.
^^ Perhaps, but most companies aren’t led by someone who professes to support liberal causes, and donated heavily to HRC.
Given the firehose of allegations coming out regarding his behavior, which the board would have known given the number of payoffs, defending an all-male board in this case is ridiculous. At least Uber addressed their problem CEO and is making attempts to deal with it.
You heard rumors for 30 years, 30 long years! At some point you begin to believe rumors, I would think. I don’t know what you do but one thing you don’t do is pretend you knew nothing about it.

Apparently, SNL program skewering HW was canceled by someone higher up on the ladder. There was an article about that on NYT. I believe SNL wasn’t the only one getting their program about HW canceled. NYT itself canceled the similar article/investigation in 2004 after HW intervened. 13 years after they resurrected the issue.
Hollywood in general has been called out, especially in recent years, for not having enough women in power. The 9 member, all male board is not an anomaly and a complaint women have been making over and over.
The article I read about the previous NYT article having been cancelled was that it was Matt Damon and Russell Crowe in particular that pushed to have the other article cancelled. The NYT refutes the claim they cancelled under that type of pressure and states there wasn’t enough evidence, if there had been the author herself would have published it in her own paper in the years since. They state that their having paid for her travel to investigate shows they had interest even then. The truth is probably a bit of both. High powered people threatening a lawsuit and the NYT being afraid they didn’t have enough credible evidence to counter it. I could see their legs department back then making the decision. Perhaps some of the other huge cases in more recent years alleviated that concern enough that they felt they could go for it now.
Colbert talked about it last night. According to a headline I saw, so did KimmeL.
^Good for them!
It also says HW showed his “displeasure” to the Times. I took it Dsmon and Crowe were dispatched later to finish the matter.
IMO Meryl Streep’s article is in support of HW in disguise. At this point there’s no way anyone can outright support him. The best they can do is to claim he wasn’t a total monster, not to me, not everyone knew, i have never heard of it. It takes the edge off by having a counter example. She should have kept silent if she wasn’t going to condemn in the most strong term.
The worst response has been from Donna Karan who said they might have been asking for it by the way they dressed.
Not buying Donna Karen anymore.
Whenever you have power over people, you have the possibility of degrading them or using them. Today, disturbingly, we find it is NOT only men but many women, strangely enough a rash of female teachers who have sex with their very young students, who are the predators.
It’s the POWER, not the sick sexual inclinations, that drive these behaviors. Unfortunately, many people would do as Harvey, Clinton, Cosby, etc… did if only they held the power.
Thus, it has always been. Power corrupts. I don’t think there is a fix for that.
@igloo FYI She has Urban Zen in addition to DKNY. Everyone knew and no one did a thing.
I suspect if you ask an average person outside of NYC or Los Angeles who Harvey Weinstein is, they would have no idea. If you ask them who Bill O’Reilly or Bill Cosby or Donald Trump is they would. Apparently the SNL Harvey Weinstein skits fell flat with the audience in dress rehearsal, which makes sense. They don’t tend to have skits about corporate CEOs who get into trouble either. But there was an OJ skit this week.
Weinstein became the subject of reporting with women willing to go on the record and he got fired by the company named after him. Not one statement from the board attacking the accusers or trying to defend Weinstein’s actions. He was fired. I can think of certain other powerful men with companies named after them who have been accused of similar actions and who haven’t been ousted in disgrace.
Hopefully the reporting will help other victims of powerful men come forward without being treated as liars.
