^^That OJ skit was funny. The plastic knife for his steak - lol
@maya54 - yes HW did take a voluntary leave, but he did not seem contrite. He denied many of the accusations, threatened to sue the NY Times, and quoted Kanye in his defense.
The Kanye quote alone, would have made for some great jokes from the likes of SNL, Colbert, Kimmel, Fallon etc.
Fox has certainly cleaned house with the latest departure being Eric Bolling. Looks like they are now after Fox’s General Counsel who is a woman and just put herself on “voluntary leave.” She has been at Fox for over 20 years and oversaw most of the internal investigations regarding harassment claims. Four women have named her in their lawsuits against Fox claiming that the investigations were not taken seriously – the complainants were just paid off. I am betting those who agreed to settlements had to sign a Nondisclosure Agreement so they where prevented from ever speaking about it publicly.
The whole system is just self-perpetuating. And it certainly has a devastating impact on the careers of women.
HW didn’t take a “voluntary leave”. He was fired. Apparently Weinstein and his lawyer tried very hard to negotiate a voluntarily leave, but the board rejected that and terminated him.
I’m not saying I agree with Donna Karan but I did try to impress on my daughters that if they walked around with their bosoms hanging out, that is what people were going to remember about them first.
I am not into music so I don’t know if Beyoncé or Mariah have good voices, but I know they have huge bosoms that they like to show off.
However military women are in uniform and covered up and they are harassed so maybe it doesn’t matter.
That is part of the problem. If you go by interest, women make up well over half of aspiring actors, but the vast majority of parts are written for men.
It’s not limited to the film industry. Plenty of spots for women on news channels, daytime talks shows, commercials and television roles. They are represented more proportionately in those areas.
I do not think this is a political issue. He sounds like a creep who used his “power” against young actors or women he thought he could take advantage of. He sounds creepy and gross and no one deserves to be sexually harassed for just trying to get a job. He deserves to have an attorney and to defend himself like anyone else but for there to be that many women coming forward…it sounds terrible.
When you really stop and think about it the men who engage in this sort of thing are so incredibly selfish. Do they not think about the consequences should their actions become public? If they value their families should that not be enough of a deterrent?
Harvey Weinstein has 4 daughters and a son. His youngest daughter is 7 and the others grown. Can you imagine reading this sort of thing about your father? I am sure his daughters are devastated. And while his son is only 4 and I would like to believe being sheltered from all this – in Manhattan I am not sure that’s even possible on a long term basis. He really takes a lot of innocent people down with him-- presumably the people he cares most about. Really self-destructive behavior.
Sorry, but the board is complicit in this. How else to explain the 400k paid out for an “executive” whose only duty was to procure women. Granted, this example was over a decade ago, but I’m sure the board is aware of the co.'s history.
From the Waxman article that was killed by NYT:
“Multiple sources told Waxman that Fabrizio Lombardo, who headed up Miramax Italy, was actually put on the payroll to help procure women for Weinstein, and that was the reason for his $400,000 in the one-year span between 2003 and 2004 when he worked for the company.”
Ugh. So disappointing to read Donna Karan’s blaming-the-victim-because-of-how-she-dresses quotes, linked upthread. I think of her brand as modern urban career woman.
She must really, really want to help her friend (& her friend’s business), HW’s wife, designer Georgina Chapman.
Your making this comment in this thread is what I’m going to remember about you, @busyparent.
Here’s the heartbreaking story from one of the women Weinstein allegedly raped, a Middlebury student looking to break into acting:
He rapes her and she blames herself! This is what victim-blaming leads to, @busyparent. Please think again about how you comment on alleged sexual assaults. Ms. Evans could have arrived at the interview stark naked and it still wouldn’t justify Weinstein raping her.
I never said the women deserved it. I said we should consider how women present themselves in public. Yes, we should be able to walk down the street naked, but I wouldn’t advocate it.
Waxman chose to keep quiet after having collected all this damning evidence and only spoke up after the NYT published its exposé. She could have dropped the nuke on her personal news site. Did she not have enough proof that the $400k exec was there only to provide Russian escorts? Oh Matt and Ben etc. shut me up. Come on. Now that the cat is out of the bag, she blames NYT for keeping it quiet since 2004. Where is HER journalistic integrity? SHE too knew and had the means to publish elsewhere.
"I never said the women deserved it. I said we should consider how women present themselves in public. "
I think we should consider and focus on why males are unwilling to control themselves. That’s the issue. We, as a society, set the bar too low assuming they can’t in the face of “bosoms”. It’s rubbish.
These males of economic stature and success, I hold to an even hire standard. “To those whom much is given, much is expected”. How easy it should be for those wielding power and resources to be generous and giving not twisting that power to feed their own twisted vices.
And @“Cardinal Fang” I have personal experience of a bad situation when I was in grad school, and yeah I blamed myself, so believe me I get it. I also grew up with men who ogled women’s chests and had a hard time seeing beyond that. I think women need to be careful with how they present themselves. When Amal Clooney steps out do we see her bosom on full display? Who do you think gets taken more seriously Amal Clooney or Kim Kardashian, both successful women? I am NOT saying either deserves or is asking to be assaulted.
^^ Rosanna Arquette and Mira Sorvino are claiming HW destroyed their careers for rejecting his advances. He even threatened to destroy Nathan Lane’s career for telling a joke he didn’t like. I imagine Waxman and many less powerful people were terrified of Weinstein. If the almighty NYT refused to go up against him, what chance did a small fry journalist have? Weinstein seems to be a master manipulator. Read some of the accounts of the poor ladies stuck in a room with the guy.
