Has anyone seen "Melancholia"?

It opened in theaters this weekend, but I saw it via video on demand. First Lars von Trier film I’ve ever made it all the way through. I’d certainly recommend it, depending on what you’re looking for in a movie. One review I read said that, if you’re a “Transformers” fan, this isn’t going to be your kind of film, and roger that.

The performances are outstanding, especially Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg, who were superb. The cinematography and special effects were spectacular, though anyone who goes to see it primarily for the end-of-the-world sequences is not going to be a happy camper. If you don’t like hand-held camera shots, it’s not your movie, either. The pace is slow and exacting, but I liked that the director expected the audience to stay with him.

It’s about the most destructive kind of depression (von Trier apparently has suffered deeply with depression for years), though somehow I didn’t find it depressing. It’s not the kind of movie I could love, but it really was fascinating and thought-provoking. Anyone else?

I’m very excited about this film. Read an interview a few years back with Kirsten Dunst on her long, difficult battle with severe depression. Isn’t Charlotte Rampling in this? I’m really glad to hear you liked, frazzle.

Charlotte Rampling is excellent in a small role as a bitter, toxic mother.

I have been a Kirsten Dunst fan since at least 1994, when she was the only actress, imho, who was right for her part in “Little Women.” She is simply exceptional in this. Charlotte Gainsbourg, too - they are extremely unlikely sisters but I completely bought their relationship.

“Charlotte Rampling is excellent as a bitter, toxic mother”
–I can’t help thinking, “Just like in Georgy Girl!”

Saw it on Comcast On Demand a couple weeks ago. Beautiful but pretty much relentlessly dark. Dunst is great as is everyone else. Just be prepared for it.
