^ I know. I’ll almost certainly qualify for the free education, and UAF will be my doomsday-scenario safety. UAF actually has some good programs, but they let anyone in and I could never live in Fairbanks.

My friend got recruited by UC San Diego.

great story

@Noimagination: which school do you go to? I hope it’s not too personal

I lived in Fairbanks for 6 years. Since I was a child then I didn’t know much. It was an okay place, very bleak in the winter if you don’t have fun stuff to do indoors.

UAF is very decent actually, it’s just that I have been there for so long and I know how it works inside out, there isn’t any novelty to it. It might not feel like going to college if I go there, it might just feel like going from middle school to high school, in the same town.

^^ WOAH.

ANOTHER fellow alaskan here. So are you saying that if you’re top 10%, you automatically get a full ride to UAA?
Because I’ve never heard that and that might make me reconsider.

But I’d rather go to UAF or UA Southeast. Is it the same deal there?

And I love Fairbanks =]

I’ve never heard of this top 20% thing here in Florida :-/

But I do know of the Texas 10%.

^

Here you go.

I think LSU will let you apply in the summer. I may do that instead of applying to any instate schools as safeties. Plus if you have a 30 ACT you don’t have to pay tuition.

In at Gateway community college ;)

I don’t think you’re a risk, but I prefer to avoid posting any information that could be used to identify me online. Anyone can read it here…

I was up in Fairbanks for a few days in February as part of a competition. The cold itself doesn’t bother me (once you get below zero, how far barely matters anymore). Fairbanks is just such a small town to live in when you can’t go outside.

[UAF Admissions: Undergrad Students: UA Scholars](http://www.uaf.edu/admissions/undergrad/uascholars/index.html)
[UA Scholars at UAA](http://www.uaa.alaska.edu/amss/uascholars.cfm)

It’s a hefty scholarship, and the instate prices are ridiculously cheap. I would be extremely careful considering UAA - here are some of the things I have heard from actual students/faculty:

Good luck getting all your classes - there will likely be scheduling conflicts. I’ve heard it’s better in the Honors program.

Total commuter school. Anchorage residents who live at home make up most of the student body.

The bureaucracy is overwhelming and petty disputes among departments are common.

Parking is a disaster and it can be cold to walk in winter. Buses are terrible here.

People got into Clemson early?

I need to know of that. The in-state tuition there makes me have to consider it.

UAA is so scary. Every time I go there, it’s completely deserted and it feels haunted. I don’t think I’ll actually consider it to much, but that scholarship sounds appealing.

Just took a class at UAA and did the finals. The campus is indeed pretty haunted. Especially it’s situated between downtown and south Anchorage. Anchorage over all is a terrible town, nothing too exciting if you are not a Subaru driving skier or other crazy non-conventional sport playing person.

You said you are a fellow Alaskan? Get out ASAP.

I agree with noimagination’s assessment. The parking is terrible. You either have to get a pass (which is about 20 dollars for a summer) or pay 20 dollars a day or get TOWED. No jokes. The library is terrible, although UAA just got some fast internet donation from GCI. But I think any internet down in lower-48 is faster than say 1mb/s.

It’s so true that UAA is mainly comprised of people from Anchorage, so far I don’t even know where the dorm in UAA is. A car is definitely needed, you need to drive from class to class, ridiculous.

This thread has become a UAA bashing thread.

I could go on for hours about why I don’t like that place. On their homepage they have information about bait-casting and fly fishing. You seriously can’t get any more hick than that.

…too bad I’m stuck in Math there next year

UAA Math? What a nightmare.

I just took differential equations there. For all the time slot available, given that there are at least 12 workable hours in a day, they had to arrange it from 7:00AM to 9:00AM. I checked the other math classes, which all ends at around 12:00PM. What do they do in the afternoon? Vacant classrooms.

Major inconvenience for me during the summer. Glad that was over with.

To me this is worse but ordinary differential equation is all they offer in the summer, nothing higher beyond that, which is terrible. UAF is much better, at least they offer more options there. You’d think that Anchorage being like 6 times bigger than Fairbanks, its campus would have more classes. But in reality it’s the campus in the smaller town that has more options.

EDIT:

Oh what the hell is with fees? I am taking a 3 credit course, which for locals is 160 or so per credit. I wound up with about 150 in extra charges for getting my ass onto the campus. I thought I had paid ALL the fees then halfway through the course period I got another bill for 40 dollars. Student government fee, ROUND 2! I haven’t seen jack being done by the student government.

I was trying to sell some of my stuff and looking for a billboard to post advertisements on. I searched all the major buildings and all the poster boards are for “local business” advertisements. I don’t see any personal ads. What a shame.

I hate UAA. UAF is more livable with, but if you don’t have to be there, don’t be there. (UAF has a great mining, arctic engineering. It’s bio department is also top notch. If you search ranking by major UAF is ranked in top 5 for a lot of niche engineering. You also have a lot more opportunities. The weather, is pitiful on the other hand. Summer is more livable but then everybody would be out for vacation or back in his or her own hometown. Snow, -20 to -40 weather from Octorber to April/May. 4-5 hour of workable daylight from Nov. to late March. If you play video game or love to read, then it’s perfect for you. You have an excuse to not go out!)

Alaska? Not the best place to get your education.

They should change the title to “Alaska Thread”

lol 10char

Accepted to Iowa State!!!

It only took 8 days.

^

Wow really? You may have applied there as ED binding, meaning you must attend.

When I visited Iowa State they said they start accepting applications after July 1st. So I’m not that surprised she got in already.

It’s a really nice school though.
