Long story short, but I might be getting a new phone from Apple due to a problem they caused. I have the 3G which I have had issues with ever since I updated the software to 4.0.

I think the new 4 iPhone has had too many problems, although I think those will be resolved. I just can’t decide if I should just the 3Gs instead or go ahead and get the 4. I do like having new technology as long as it works well.

I upgraded my 3G to the 4 and I like it a lot. I would do it. The new features are nice and I don’t have any problems. I guess you’ll need that stupid bumper.

If they are giving you the choice then I’d go for the I4. You won’t be eligible for an upgrade for a while. I gave the original, yes an OLD one! I was so anxious for the I4. I’m holding out with all of the problems. I honestly think there is a chance we’ll see an I4.5 to fix this antenna mess. They put out their new iPods in Sept for the holidays. I wouldn’t be surprised to see something then. I’ll see if I can keep this puppy on life support until next year. Ugghh.

I have heard of problems with the 4.0 software on the 3G phone. I did not have antenna problems with my iPhone 4 for some reason. I did go ahead and get the bumper since I like a case (the bumper is barely a case, but it does protect the phone somewhat).

One is most likely to have antenna issues if one is on the fringe of AT&T coverage, like in the deep suburbs. If you are in the city you probably won’t notice and will get all the benefits if you do upgrade, like the excellent 960x640 resolution, 5 MP camera, much longer battery life, etc.

The Apple Genius said there should have been a warning on itunes for those with 3G phones to tell them not to download the newer software. When I asked if I should download the new version that can out this week in hopes that it would correct my issues, he said no!

Instead of a new phone, I would rather have a huge discount on the new computer I might possibly need; currently waiting for the vertict on my computer. My hard drive was replaced on Sunday and then my phone wouldn’t sync with the computer. I had not installed anything on the computer at the time, so it only had the bare minimum on it. The Genius was able to get the computer to recognize the phone, we made a back up of the phone and went to sync. Most of my info on my phone vanished! No problem you say, just restore using the backup, except Genius says we need to make a new backup just in case and makes one with a new name. Instead of having 2 seperate backups in the list, the 2nd one overwrote the first one; the one with all my information on it.

My original hard drive is fried, although I have a tech person looking to see if he can recover the data. So in a matter of days I have lost all information on my computer HD as well as my phone!! All I wanted to do was back up my phone before something happened; too bad that didn’t work! I do have a backup on my external hard drive that is several months all, but it is better than nothing. Unfortunately, I just started doing work for my husband, and it was all on my computer not backed up. Lesson learned now that I am working to back up often.

No way I’m downloading 4.0. My kid did and she’s still clicking along without problems but with my luck? No way. I got a message from Microsoft saying I needed to download a service pack on my home desktop computer yesterday. I did. Now I’m typing on my laptop as the desktop doesn’t know its  from a hatrack. :(

I updated to the 4.0 software on my 3GS the first week it came out and I haven’t had any problems (knock on wood). The biggest difference for me is the use of folders to organize my apps. The multitasking stuff isn’t that useful for me.

That said, I’m in no rush to upgrade to the iPhone 4 with all the current problems. I’ll wait until the bugs are worked out. The 3GS still does the job!

4.0 and 4.0.2 do not seem to cause problems for the 3Gs, just on 3G phones. Not everyone is having trouble with the updates, but the people that are having issues own a 3G.

I have a 3G, and I seriously regret downloading 4.0. I’ve read in online user communities about various ways to restore the old software, but there’s always someone who’s had problems after doing that. Has anyone here been successful? I’m thinking of going into the Apple store and asking them to do it. I’ve heard they’re not interested in being helpful on that issue, but I’m willing to push hard. I am not eligible for an upgrade until early next year.

Apple has made 4 versions of the iPhone - the original, the 3G, the 3GS and the 4G. With the latest version of the operating system for the phone, version 4.0, only the 3G, 3GS, and 4G phones were supported on the upgrade.

Turns out that the 3G phones probably should not have been supported on the upgrade as they really lack the processing power and memory to run the new software.

Apple is supposedly working on a 4.1 release which will address some of the issues on the 3G - but for now, its probably best that 3G users stay on the older version of the software.

As for the original question, the 4G phone is simply wonderful despite the bad press on the antenna issue. If you have it in a case, there is no issue. Meanwhile, the new screen is amazing, faster processor makes a huge difference in application speed and the new camera is great.

^ This is correct, my original iPhone does not get the new os. Oddly however, it does seem to be having trouble at the same time with mobile me sync on ical. For some reason the things being entered on ical on my mac are not showing up on my iPhone and vise versa. This usually happens via mobile me in the ‘sky’ within 15min. Irking the heck out of me!! Anyone else having this problem or am I lucky?

If you are having problems you cannot resolve I highly recommend going into an Apple store to speak to a rep if you have one near enough. We have not had good luck with Apple phone or online support. The left hand does not know what the right hand is doing and you tend to get bounced around a lot.

blueiguana- if your comment was directed to me, I am dealing with the Apple store directly. I love my store and have faith they will try to make me happy. We are just waiting to see if my computer is repairable before we make any decisions on what’s next.
