We are heading to Nashville tomorrow to see Vandy on Monday. Any recommendations for something to do downtown or a great place to eat?

You might want to contact MomofWildChild.

Oh oh! A question I can help with! Let me relish this moment…

I recommend The Old Spaghetti Factory. Very good food, good cost, but I would go for lunch rather than dinner. The surrounding neighborhood is pretty safe, but once in a while you hear about things. If you’re willing to splurge, The Melting Pot has excellent fondue. Good barbecue can be found on Broadway.

The Frist Center offers many exhibits, and I really liked it. I wouldn’t go to the Parthenon, though, unless you want to kill an hour or two. It’s mostly just, “Oh, nice columns.”

I assume you’ll be staying near West End, close to Vandy?

Thanks, snoopieiscool. We are staying on Elliston Pl, which says it is walking distance to the Admissions office. Is this correct? I didn’t realize The Melting Pot was a chain/franchise! We have that (and Old Spaghetti Factory) here as well. Both are fun! Morton’s a well known steak place, has also been suggested. is there anything that is specific to Nashville? Perhaps owned and run by a local chef?

And soozie-- we think alike! I already PM’ed MOWC! Our kids lived in the same res. college at Rice. I am hoping perhaps she’ll have time for coffee or something!

For local food, I highly, highly suggest the Loveless Cafe. It’s a piece of Nashville history, according to all the tourist guides, but I just like the fried chicken.

Here’s its site:http://www.lovelesscafe.com/index.html

Check out the Chowhound website for good restaurants, too.

Thanks, cleveland and snoopyiscool! Will do my homework!

I don’t have lots of suggestions because I often make flying trips to Nashville - leave in the morning and come home around dinner to our hometown which is 2 hours away. However, my ex and his wife often go to visit and take the kiddos out for nice dinners. My children love Flemings and Midtown Cafe, both near campus. Midtown Cafe is just across the street from the Courtyard - I think the address is someting like 19th and West End. Bread and Co., in the Marriott complex by campus, is a favorite lunch stop of ours. The Frist Center exhibit featuring works by Matisse and Picasso was wonderful, but unfortunately it closes on Sunday.

Tennessean here…

Uh, ditto on the rec of SnoopyIsCool.

(^_^)

We’ve enjoyed taking my d to the Sunset Grill, Maggiano’s Little Italy’s, and PF Chang’s (the latter two are chains), all very close to Vandy. The Pancake Pantry is fun for breakfast or lunch - it’s very popular, though, so you may have to wait. Bread and Co. is great for lunch too, either to eat in or take out. But it’s always mobbed whenever we go.

Thanks, everyone. My h. was given South Street and Bound’rys as recommendations, and someone whose opinion I value ( ) suggested The Tin Angel. Any comments?? I read that Bound’rys is cigar-friendly, and I do not like cigatrette or cigar smoke. Would this be a big issue at Bound’rys?

Loveless is a little bit out of town, and I haven’t been there (believe it or not). Would be game to try it if you want.

Jack’s bbq on broadway, uncle bud’s catfish.

No kidding… **** of the Walk - it’s out by Opryland. It’s an experience, especially the giant rocking chair that makes you look like Edith Ann when you sit in it.

OK… CC wouldn’t let me type in the first name of the restaurant; it filled it in with *'s, so I have to get creative. It rhymes with walk, but has the letters C and O and C and K in them. It’s also another word for a chicken I think.

I may be a little late…but if you’re into Chinese, go to PF Chang’s Bistro. I visited a friend in TN for a week last summer and we went to Nashville for a day and went to this restaurant…and it was very very very good!

I also have a soft spot for it because I don’t like fortune cookies, but I got one there anyway…it was literally like the 3rd fortune cookie I ever ate, and I eat at a lot of chinese places. But my “fortune” read “Get away from home awhile to restore your energies”…the irony of going to visit a friend to get away from the stresses of home, and getting this fortune. It’s taped up to my dorm desk in front of me as I type :)

I’m from Kentucky and second the recommendation of C O C K of the Walk for catfish and other Southern specialties like iced tea and cornbread. It’s definitely a tradition in my family.

If you have the time/interest for Cheekwood Botanical Gardens ($8-10/person admission, $30/max/car), get lunch reservations for their cafe The Pineapple Room. Wonderful food. Really wonderful.

The Boundry used to be known as a pick-up joint but I think the food is different and fun.

Rumba’s on West End. Lots of reasonable appetizers and probably the best food around campus within a student’s rare splurge. plus American Airline points! Tin Angel, also on West End, for a more expensive meal. Bread Company (i think this is what it is called–the kids refer to as BreadCo.) for a wide selection of cooked to order items, salads, breads/pastries, deli items and reasonable. I’ve eaten at all and can recommend. use your car to drive even tho close to Elliston as it can be HOT and STEAMY this time of year.
Good luck for your visit! Have fun and walk the campus!

Thanks, everyone, for all the suggestions. I appreciate the warning about the weather, musictoad, but ironically, for us, heading to Nashville means heading NORTH, so hot and steamy is the norm for us!

DH has a bit of an upset stomach from last night’s dinner. Hopefully it will abate so we can enjoy Nashville’s libations!

jym and I, complete with spouses and sons had a fun dinner at South Street. The boys tried to adjust to the concept of internet friendships (I guess Facebook is OK for THEM, but CC is “too weird”??) while the adults acted like old friends.

I LOVE meeting CC people “live”!
