Help and guidance for Engineering and Busineess

Hi everyone, I am new here and this is actually my first post, so please be nice

I will be going into Grade 12 this year and have started post secondary research. I am seriously considering engineering (mechanical or systems) because I feel like It would be a good fit for me. I chose mechanical and systems engineering because I feel like they were the best fit for my business/entrepreneurial mind and technical mind. I also took an online quiz which said I would make a good mechanical engineer. However, it seems like systems engineering is more business oriented and diverse.

On the other hand, I am equally passionate about business. So I was wondering what would be the best way to get educated in both fields. I was thinking of getting an undergrad in engineering and then getting an MBA. Is that the best way or does anyone have other reccomendations. I heard that getting a BAA isn’t worth it. If i pursue getting an MBA, I would want to get it from an IVEY leauge school in the states. The reason why I would want to do an MBA is because I am also interested in marketing, management, real estate, industry and basically all areas except accounting.

Basically I am really lost and hope that answers to these questions will help me:

 1. I have no idea what an undergraduate program entails. Will the first year be general engineering and then I will have to specialize? if so when would i have to decide
 2. What steps I should be taking to get an MBA after engineering from a top IVEY Leauge school. (is this even possible and has it been done)
 3. How many years would it take to get the engineering degree and MBA (plus work experience and all that) and what would courses would I have to choose.
 4. What are the best engineering schools in Canada (Waterloo, U of T, UBC, McGill…?) and what are the application requirements and deadlines? My marks in grade 10 and 11 were unacceptable so i will be relying on my grade 12 marks. Will 90% or over plus the fact that I am my schools student Union president be enough to get me into the to engineering schools?
 5. finally, please help me decide which type of engineering I should do cinsidering i am interested in both engineering and business.

p.s. I have full financial backing from my parents. They want me to get the best education, no matter what the cost.

The answers to most of your questions can best be found by you researching each schools’ website. You just google the schools’ name. Go to Admissions–undergraduate–international (assuming you are intl). You can then link to Academics—engineering–programs and you will usually find course requirements.

To get an MBA at a top US or Canadian business school you would need to have at least 2 years full time work experience after completing your bachelor’s degree before applying.

Don’t fret over grades 10 and 11 marks… UBC is the only school on your list that takes ECs in consideration before waitlist time.

If, somehow, you’re waitlisted, then you can invoke ECs relevant to the chosen major(s) in an essay…

tomofboston: I am a Canadian Student from Edmonton, Alberta. In addition, I have done research, however I am still lost and haven’t found answers to these questions.

Catria: Thank you, it is such a relief to know that my grade 10&11 marks will not be a worry. However, will they see them when my transcript is sent to the school? Also, what does EC stand for (extra cirriculars?)
