LAC or bigger university, either is ok. Son is strong on verbal/writing parts of SAT and SAT II Subject tests in low-mid 700s range, but scores low 600 on math. Not interested in pre-med or science or math. Music, writing, and business are areas of interest. GPA 3.6W, 4.2UW w/7 APs and honors courses in a smaller public H.S.

Berklee in Boston?

What kind of musician? You can post on the music forum here and you will get a lot of help, but you will have to give a lot more information than just that you want to be a “musician/writer.”

What kind of writer? (Or are you referring to songwriting?)

There is a great book that you can get on Amazon called “Creative Colleges,” which has best schools for both these categories.

From what you have said so far, it is hard to say whether college or conservatory. Berklee, which someone mentioned, is a conservatory, focused mainly on jazz, rock, contemporary music.

Good luck…

Belmont might be a fit. They have a great music business program.

Lawrence University in Appleton, WI is a 1,450 student “Colleges That Change Lives” LAC that also has a music conservatory. The school has an admit rate of about 66% and is standardized test score optional; However the 25%-75% SAT range is 1789-2110.

The school has a wooded 425 acre northern campus extension called Björklunden on the shores of Lake Michigan for research and student retreats.

The school has a pre-professional business program designed to prepare students to pursue an MBA.They also offer English and Theatrical Arts majors. More here:

[Lawrence University](http://lawrence.edu/)

Won’t help at all with business, but for music and writing, you couldn’t do much better than Bard.

Denver has an excellent music business program, with a topnotch music school.

You didn’t say what kind of music, but Knox College in Illinois, a CTCL school for creative writing and choral music.

If he wants to double major in music and writing, what about Oberlin? He would need to apply to and audition for the conservatory and apply to the college as well. And it would probably take more than four years if he were to double major…but it’s a great school.

To me, screams Skidmore. They have a merit music scholarship, half tuition I think. Great music, theater, and a business major!!! Saratoga Springs is wonderful.

Not sure of the strength of the writing, but the music school at U of Puget Sound is strong, and they have a business major. The U is due to a few professional schools that have a grad program, otherwise is a larger LAC.

Another vote for Lawrence in Appleton.

Puff Daddy went to Howard.

OP - Does he have some ideas about which areas he’d like to major in? If not, that’s ok… it takes time to figure thing out. But if wants to major in music there is often a whole special path of auditions etc.

Recommendng my own college: Ithaca College. Known music school with a lot of different options for majors (Composition, Theory, Music w/ an outside field). Of course there is an audition process with it also.
