I am looking for something specific and I am having a hard time. I know that a few you can help.

We would like a king down comforter (prefer goose), sewn so that the feathers do not end up in one spot, prefer WASHABLE, and in a color (prefer not to deal with duvet covers). We would like it warm on really cold northeastern nights (although I have read that a few can be too warm…oy), and we definitely do not want the type that looks like a thin blanket (I bought and sent those back last year)!

I do not care about brand. I just want to find this blanket! Any suggestions? I really need them!

Yes, The Company Store exists! I have a catelogue of theirs sitting on my coffee table. Let me thumb through…yes, on page 37 of the latest catelogue are some beautiful goose down comforters in some sophisticated colors–sterling gray, light jade, cloud blue… and they have the sewn baffles that will keep the feathers from shifting about. Check it out!

Last year, I returned horrible ones from one of the companies listed above. We kept our old ones. I can’t deal with experiments. I am looking for suggestions from someone who knows and/or is happy with their purchase. Please just send me the links! This should not be as complex as college shopping!

Okay, I will look at the Company Store. The ones that I didn’t care for because they were way to thin came from Land’s End. I feel badly saying that because I like a lot of things that LE sells, but not the down comforters that I bought.

I have an extra-large down comforter from Company Store. We like it, but it is very puffy and thick and very, very warm. You could sleep in an unheated room under it, I think. We only use it occasionally because it is so warm. I don’t remember what fill-power it is, but I think it was the lightest kind.

LLBean’s down comforters are very high quality. Made in the US by a company called Downlite. Premium goose down comforters. This is the second warmest they make. I have the warmest and it is seriously hot. The “permabaffles” keep the down in place. Their lighter comforters have “baffle box” with stiching that goes through the comforter. Keeps the down in place, but is thinner around the stitching.

All down comforters are washable, but for a king size, you really have to go to a laundromat with a commercial front load washer. Use down wash and then put three tennis balls in the dryer. It will take three or four cycles in the dryer. Because washing them is time consuming, you really want to get the duvet cover, even though you said you would prefer not to. That way, you only have to wash the comforter every year or two.

The LLBEAN [duvet covers](http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/44654?feat=0-ppxs&dds=y) are sized to fit these comforters exactly (first time I’ve ever had that happen). They have sewn in ties to anchor the four corners so the comforter doesn’t shift. And, instead of dinky little buttons that are impossible to fasten and usually break, these have huge heavy-duty buttons to close them at the bottom.

I bought a Westin Heavenly Bed comforter when it was on sale at Nordies. I love the zippered cover with corner ties; unfortunately, the comforter turned out to be too hot for our climate. Does anyone have any recommendations on lightweight down comforters?

or you are welcome to come to my house and use my super-super Miele frontloader. :)

I’m with you, Bunsen, we don’t need such heavy comforters here in our climate. I think we might need down blankets rather than comforters.

My H wants me to keep ours in case we have a power failure of several days or a week like the one we had a few years back. (You’ll remember the one I mean.) We were using all the blankets in the house for that one!

Hi Northeastmom!
I second The Company Store. My daughter #1 still uses her down comforter purchased from TCS in 2005 and it is still perfect. They still offer down comforters in many price ranges and colors. I just washed one of mine and they come out of the dryer like new.

Land’s End used to sell their down comforters in different weights so a thinner one may have been a lighter weight one. We all have down comforters on our beds. I got most of them at either Shopko or Walmart. They have square baffles so the down or polyfill stay in place. We have had the one on our bed for about 20 years now. I wash it in the washing machine and dry it in the dryer with no issues. I am sure I got it on sale for maybe $50. The ones on the kids’ beds are at least 10 years old. We used them year round.

Whatever you buy, please make sure it is made in the USA! I’ll put in a plug for the Maine businesses: LL Bean and Cuddledown. :)

I have a “brand X” comforter that I got at one of those bedding dicsount places several decades ago, and while it is okay, the quality cannot begin to compare to Cuddledown.
